Williamson County Breaks Ground on Southwest Regional Park Turf Project, Expanding Year-Round Sports Opportunities

June 01 2026

Thousands of athletes, families, and visitors who use Southwest Williamson County Regional Park can expect more playing time, improved field conditions, and expanded recreational opportunities in the years ahead as construction begins on a major sports facility upgrade.

Williamson County officials and representatives from Lonestar Soccer Club gathered May 28 to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new synthetic turf project at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park, one of the county’s most heavily used recreational destinations. The improvements are designed to support the area's continued growth while enhancing a community asset that serves youth sports, tournaments, practices, and outdoor recreation throughout the year.

Located in southwest Williamson County, the regional park is home to numerous soccer fields, trails, playgrounds, sports courts, and other amenities that attract residents from across Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, Georgetown, and surrounding communities.

Four Soccer Fields to Receive FIFA-Certified Synthetic Turf

As part of the project, soccer fields 6, 7, 8, and 9 will be converted from natural grass to FIFA-certified synthetic turf. County officials say the change will significantly increase the number of hours the fields can be used while reducing maintenance costs and improving overall playing conditions.

The project will also include replacement of the eight-lane running track surrounding Field No. 6, creating additional benefits for runners, athletes, schools, and community users.

According to Williamson County, the turf conversion project carries an estimated cost of approximately $6.25 million, while the track replacement is expected to cost about $300,000. Funding for the track renovation comes through the voter-approved 2023 Williamson County Parks Bond.

Partnership Helps Deliver Long-Term Community Investment

The improvements are being completed through a partnership between Williamson County and Lonestar Soccer Club.

Williamson County allocated funding for the project, while Lonestar Soccer Club invested $6.5 million toward the effort. County officials noted that funding remaining from Lonestar’s contribution will be dedicated to future maintenance and upkeep of the synthetic turf fields.

Halff Associates is serving as the project's design firm, and Hellas Construction is the contractor overseeing construction.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Valerie Covey said the partnership will provide lasting benefits for local residents.

“I am thankful for the partnership with Lonestar Soccer Club to bring artificial turf fields to Williamson County’s Southwest Regional Park,” said Covey. “This improvement will enhance the playing experience, increase field availability throughout the year and provide more opportunities for our community to enjoy the park and its amenities.”

For many families involved in youth sports, field availability has become increasingly important as Williamson County continues to experience rapid population growth. Synthetic turf allows fields to recover more quickly after heavy use and weather events, helping reduce cancellations and extending playing seasons.

Years of Planning Lead to Construction

Williamson County Parks Director TW Dieckmann emphasized that the project reflects years of planning and collaboration.

“Projects like these take time to come fruition. It wouldn’t have been possible without years of dedication from my three predecessors: Jim Rodgers, Randy Bell and Russell Fishbeck. I’m glad to see us break ground on this project which will benefit generations to come,” said Dieckmann. “I’m also grateful for the partnership we have with Lonestar Soccer Club, which has helped bring this project to this point.”

The investment represents more than a field upgrade. County leaders view it as part of a broader effort to maintain high-quality recreational facilities that keep pace with the needs of one of Texas’ fastest-growing regions.

Supporting Youth Sports and Community Recreation

Lonestar Soccer Club President John Buckler said the project will have a lasting impact on local athletes and their families.

“Today’s groundbreaking — converting these four fields to an artificial surface — represents a major investment in the future of youth sports,” Buckler said. “Lonestar is proud to collaborate with the county to sponsor the upgrade of a key community asset that will expand access, increase reliability and support year-round play. This project will benefit thousands of athletes and families for years to come, and it reflects what can be accomplished when public and nonprofit partners work together with a shared vision.”

As part of the agreement, Lonestar Soccer Club will receive scheduling priority, a discounted hourly rate for field use, and naming rights associated with the upgraded fields. The organization has also committed additional funding toward future replacement of the synthetic turf when needed.

What Happens Next

Construction is now underway on the four-field turf conversion and running track replacement project at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park. Once completed, the upgrades are expected to improve field durability, increase scheduling flexibility, and provide expanded recreational opportunities for athletes and residents throughout Williamson County.

For families who regularly visit the park, the project represents an investment not only in sports infrastructure, but in a community gathering place that continues to grow alongside the region it serves.
