Prime Pickleball Swings into Tomball with New Indoor Facility: Why This Fast-Growing Sport Has Locals Hooked

May 23 2025

Pickleball’s rapid rise is making a big splash in North Harris County, with a new facility—Prime Pickleball—set to open in Tomball this August. Located at 8028 Dowdell Rd., Suite 501, the 11,500-square-foot venue, known as Willow Forest Square Bldg 5, is undergoing a $94,000 renovation to transform it into a dedicated pickleball destination.

Construction of the project will begin in early June 2025, and is expected to be completed by early August 2025. Renovations will include the interior build-out of six chain-link-fenced courts, five restrooms, and the installation of a new exterior door and window, according to an official permit filing.

A Game for Everyone: What Is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Played either indoors or outdoors on a court similar in size to badminton, the game uses a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball. Players can compete in singles or doubles, and games are typically played to 11 points.

Invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three dads—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum—pickleball was designed to be a family-friendly game. Since then, it has evolved into a national sensation, known for its accessibility across age groups and its surprisingly competitive spirit.

Why Pickleball Has Exploded in Popularity

There are several reasons why pickleball has caught fire in recent years:

  • Low Barrier to Entry: The smaller court size, lightweight equipment, and slower ball speed make it ideal for beginners, older adults, and people returning to sports after injuries.

  • Social Appeal: Pickleball is inherently social, with many clubs and communities forming leagues, mixers, and casual tournaments.

  • Health Benefits: It’s a full-body workout that enhances coordination, agility, and cardiovascular health without the high-impact demands of sports like tennis or running.

The sport’s popularity has surged nationwide, but Texas—particularly suburban areas like Tomball, Katy, and Cypress—has seen a notable uptick. This is thanks in part to the region’s year-round playing weather and growing number of indoor venues.
