New Bexar County Animal Care Facility Breaks Ground, Bringing 132 Kennels to Southwest Side
For families who have ever found a stray dog wandering a county road, tried to reunite a lost pet with its owner or wondered where an animal picked up outside San Antonio city limits goes next, a major expansion of Bexar County's animal-care system is officially underway.
Bexar County broke ground Sept. 22 on a new animal care facility at 6841 Cagnon Rd, San Antonio, TX 78252 on the Southwest Side. The roughly 17,000-square-foot facility will include 132 kennels, veterinary surgery and examination space, an adoption area and administrative offices. Construction is expected to be completed in April 2027.
More Room for Animals in County Care
The expansion addresses a basic capacity problem. Bexar County's existing animal shelter in Kirby has 60 kennels and serves roughly 1,100 animals each year, according to reporting on the groundbreaking. The Kirby shelter is expected to continue operating after the new facility opens.
The project has been years in the making. Commissioners previously approved a construction award of approximately $10.9 million to Catamount Constructors, while the overall facility has been described at the groundbreaking as a roughly $12 million project. County records show the project scope grew during planning, including an increase in planned kennel capacity.
The new building is intended to be more than additional holding space. Plans include examination and surgery rooms as well as adoption and staff areas, giving county employees more room to care for animals while also creating a place where members of the public can interact with adoptable pets. What Happens Next
The facility primarily matters to residents of unincorporated Bexar County, where the county provides animal services separate from the City of San Antonio's municipal system. Those communities have grown considerably, while the county has continued relying on its much smaller Kirby operation.
If construction stays on the current schedule, the new Southwest Side Bexar County Animal Care Facility is expected to be completed in April 2027. Until then, county animal-care operations will continue through the existing system.
