Music and Memory: Cinco Ranch Branch Library Library Hosts Free “Memory Disco” for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers in Katy

August 05 2025

When words fail, music often speaks—especially for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. On Saturday, August 30, Fort Bend County LibrariesCinco Ranch Branch Library will host a free community event, “Memory Disco for Seniors”, offering caregivers and families in Grand Lakes and beyond an opportunity to experience how music can bring connection, joy, and comfort to loved ones facing memory loss.

The event, which takes place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the library’s Meeting Room at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd, Katy, TX 77494, features Anika and Anish Ganesh, representatives of the Day By Day Project, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting those affected by dementia. The session will introduce the use of maracas and rhythmic engagement, tools that research shows may enhance focus, attention span, and mood.

The Science Behind Music and Dementia Care

Alzheimer’s disease affects an estimated 6.9 million Americans aged 65 and older, according to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2025 Facts & Figures report. Dementia, which includes Alzheimer’s as its most common type, is one of the leading causes of disability and dependency among older adults globally. While there is currently no cure, non-pharmacological interventions like music therapy are increasingly recognized as effective tools to improve quality of life.

Studies have found that music can activate parts of the brain associated with emotion and memory, even when cognitive function has significantly declined. “Music helps individuals reconnect with long-ago memories, often triggering familiarity, happiness, and peace,” explained Anika Ganesh, a certified volunteer with Musical Memories Katy, the volunteer branch of the Day By Day Project.

Her co-presenter, Anish Ganesh, who holds an undergraduate degree in neuroscience and is currently an MD candidate, noted, “As communication becomes increasingly difficult with dementia, music can bridge the gap, offering moments of joy and clarity that words sometimes cannot.”

An Interactive Experience for Families and Caregivers

Unlike traditional lectures, “Memory Disco for Seniors” is designed to be hands-on. Caregivers are encouraged to bring loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia to participate directly. Rhythmic exercises using maracas and guided musical engagement aim to demonstrate how structured sound can improve mood and encourage cognitive activity.

“This program is built on strategies designed with the help of leading neurologists in dementia care, bringing research to life in a way that families can immediately apply at home,” shared Anika.

“The goal is to give caregivers tools and experiences that are meaningful, while also offering loved ones a sense of fun and connection,” added Anish.

Why It Matters Locally

With Fort Bend County experiencing steady growth in its senior population, programs like “Memory Disco” provide not only educational value but also emotional support for Grand Lakes families navigating the challenges of memory loss. By tapping into music’s unique ability to engage memory and emotion, caregivers and loved ones gain a tool that can transform day-to-day interactions into moments of connection and peace.
