Katy Seniors Ramping Up for Camp Hope Support Party

November 23 2022

Senior centers aren’t just a place for seniors to gather and enjoy recreational activities. They are a place for members of the community to come together to share in their commonalities, build friendships and engage in ways to support their community. In Katy, the Fussell Senior Citizen Center provides a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that fosters this kind of connection for its seniors, many of whom have a common thread: serving in our military or having a loved one who served or is on active duty. But they don’t just swap stories about their days in the military.

For many years, the City of Katy’s Fussell Senior Citizen Center has supported Camp Hope, an intensive residential program in Houston that provides a safe, supportive environment for combat veterans who are victims of trauma and post-traumatic stress. Even before Fussell existed and area seniors gathered through their local AARP chapter, this organization has been close to the hearts of these Katy seniors.

“So many of our seniors are veterans or have loved ones who are vets. This organization provides so much help and really takes care of veterans who have unseen scars from combat just like many of our seniors and their loved ones. It’s important for us to help in any way we can,” said Amanda Di Dio, social services director for the City of Katy.

Twice each year, Fussell sends a bus full of supplies to Camp Hope, most of which is donated by Fussell seniors. But this holiday season, the supplies sendoff will be even more special with their first-ever Camp Hope Support Party featuring the Stockdick Junior High Choir on Friday, December 2 at 6:00 PM. The community is welcome to attend to mix and mingle with Katy seniors, bring a donation and enjoy the joyful music.

On the Stockdick Junior High Choir’s participation in the event, “they are coming to sing, have snacks, enjoy each others company. Many of our seniors have loved ones who aren’t in the area, so this engagement is so much fun for them. So many kids don’t have a senior loved one in their life so it’s fun to see the engagement and interaction between them,” said Di Dio.

In addition to the Camp Hope Support Party, the Fussell Senior Citizen Center will be hosting a holiday open house on December 16 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. This event will officially close the donation period for the Camp Hope delivery. Members of the community are welcome to attend to see what Fussell is all about and share in some holiday merriment together.
