Harris County Precinct 4 Expands Free After-School Enrichment with Glazier, Jim & JoAnn Fonteno Senior Education Centers
Harris County Precinct 4 is investing in its youngest residents by expanding free after-school enrichment programs through the newly launched Stay After School (SAS) initiative. Commissioner Lesley Briones is inviting families to register their children for this free resource, designed to provide engaging, safe, and educational after-school programming for students in grades K–5.
The Thomas A. Glazier Senior Education Center located at 16600 Pine Forest Lane in Houston, TX 77084 will serve as one of two hubs for the program, providing West Houston families with easy access to high-quality after-school care. The second program site, Jim & JoAnn Fonteno Senior Education Center, located at 6600 Bissonnet Street in Houston’s Sharpstown area, will serve other parts of Precinct 4.
A Commitment to Enrichment and Safety
The program will run Monday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM beginning August 12, 2025, through June 4, 2026 (closed on major holidays and school breaks, following the Houston ISD schedule). Each day is carefully structured to balance academics, creativity, and physical activity:
- 15 Minutes: Rest and Recharge
- 45 Minutes: Hands-On Learning and Exploration (STEAM-based)
- 30 Minutes: Active Play and Games
- 30 Minutes: Sports and Team Challenges
- 15 Minutes: Life Skills and Leadership
- 15 Minutes: Wrap-Up and Free Play

Commissioner Briones emphasized that this program reflects her office’s focus on expanding access to quality after-school enrichment activities for children across Precinct 4. The sessions are designed not only to give parents peace of mind but also to equip students with life skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Benefits of After-School Care
Research highlights the importance of after-school programs in fostering youth success. According to the Afterschool Alliance, students who participate in after-school programs show improved academic performance, better school attendance, and increased engagement with positive social behaviors. The same study noted that 69% of parents believe after-school programs help their children gain workforce skills and 82% report that programs keep kids safe and out of trouble.
The Stay After School initiative builds on these proven benefits, creating a structured environment where children can build friendships, enhance creativity, and develop leadership skills while exploring new subjects like science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM).
