For local gardeners, fall can be one of the most useful times of year to rethink a landscape, replace plants that struggled through the Texas summer or make room for cool-season vegetables and herbs. On Saturday, October 10, 2026, the Montgomery County Master Gardener Association will give residents in Granger Pines a chance to do that with some knowledgeable help close at hand during its 2026 Fall Plant Sale in Conroe.

The sale will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office – Montgomery County, located at 9020 Airport Road in Conroe. An educational program begins an hour earlier, at 8 a.m., with Montgomery County Horticultural Agent Michael Potter highlighting plants, herbs and vegetables offered in the sale while discussing plant selection and planting techniques. Potter will also be available during the sale to answer gardening questions. 

More Than a Place to Buy Plants

That access to local gardening knowledge is part of what makes the sale different from an ordinary trip to a garden center. The Montgomery County Master Gardener Association is a nonprofit educational organization affiliated with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, with a mission of sharing research-based gardening information through education, fellowship and hands-on demonstration. Its work includes gardening classes, demonstration gardens, community events and opportunities for residents to ask questions about the challenges that come with growing plants in this part of Texas. 

The organization also has deep local roots. Montgomery County played a notable role in Texas gardening history: the first Master Gardener class in Texas was held in Montgomery County in 1979, with about 25 participants, before the program spread to counties across the state. For gardeners in Granger Pines, that history means the people answering questions at the sale are part of a long-running local effort to help homeowners make better-informed choices for their yards and gardens.

Fall and Spring Plant Sales Are Local Gardening Traditions

The October event is one of the association’s recurring plant sales, including its annual spring sale. This year’s Spring Plant Sale was held March 21 and featured a similar pre-sale educational program focused on plant selection and proper planting. Past spring sales have offered annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, vegetables and herbs, while fall sales have traditionally emphasized plants and garden selections appropriate for the cooler planting season in Montgomery County. 

The sales also help support the organization’s educational work. MCMGA says proceeds from its annual plant sales allow the nonprofit to continue sharing research-based gardening information with the public. In addition to the spring and fall events, the association’s 2026 calendar included a fruit and nut tree sale earlier in the year. 

A Chance to Ask Before You Plant

For someone trying to decide what can handle a sunny backyard, what might work in a shaded bed or which vegetables and herbs make sense for the season, being able to ask questions before taking a plant home can be especially useful. MCMGA plans to post the Fall Plant Sale inventory through its online plant shop, giving shoppers an opportunity to look over available selections before heading to Conroe. 

That may be worth doing ahead of time for residents of Granger Pines who already have a particular spot in the yard in mind. The sale runs for just three hours, from 9 a.m. to noon, and the association encourages gardeners with questions to contact the Master Gardener Help Desk at 936-539-7824.

The 2026 Montgomery County Master Gardener Fall Plant Sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2026 from 9 a.m. to noon, with the free pre-sale gardening program beginning at 8 a.m. Both will take place at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office – Montgomery County, 9020 Airport Road, Conroe, TX 77303. For longtime gardeners and people still figuring out what will survive their first Montgomery County growing season, the event offers something beyond another plant-shopping trip: a chance to take home both a plant and a little more confidence about what to do with it.
