FBCMUD 133 to Install Smart Water Meters, Enhancing Efficiency and Savings for Residents

January 29 2025

In case you missed it, Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District  133 (FBCMUD 133) has announced the decision to move forward with the installation of smart water meters after conducting a survey among residents. Of the 179 residents who participated, 153 were in favor of the installation, and 26 were opposed. As a result, the Board of Directors has approved the project, which is expected to take 6-8 months for full completion. The installation will primarily take place within the meter box, with minimal excavation unless unforeseen issues arise.

The new smart meters offer several advantages for both residents and the District. Real-time monitoring will allow residents to track their water usage from their mobile device and identify opportunities for conservation, potentially reducing water bills. Additionally, the meters are equipped with leak detection technology, which can help identify leaks early, preventing water waste and minimizing the risk of damage caused by undetected leaks. This system also provides more accurate billing, ensuring that residents are only charged for the water they actually use, rather than relying on estimated readings.

For the District, smart meters will provide valuable data that can improve water management, detect system inefficiencies, and reduce operational costs. Lakes of Bella Terra residents will also be able to manage their water usage through a web browser or mobile app. The total cost of the project is approximately $1.2 million, but there will be no additional cost to residents.

By opting to install smart meters now, the District is securing better pricing before manual meters are phased out by manufacturers. Further instructions on how to use the new system will be provided to residents once their smart meters are installed. Stay tuned for updates.
