Katy’s New Trail System to Link Leyendecker Landing and Historic Town Square: A Pathway to Health, Community, and Local Business Growth

August 05 2025

A major step toward improving health, connectivity, and economic vitality in Katy is underway as city leaders advance a trail system linking Leyendecker Landing to the City of Katy Historic Town Square. This multi-phase project, part of Katy’s long-term Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan, aims to create a safe and accessible pathway for walking, biking, and running, connecting neighborhoods to downtown businesses and community events.

“The chosen route fits the City’s long-term vision by connecting several neighborhoods with access to key destinations throughout the City with an emphasis on user safety and comfort,” said City Engineer Dave Kasper.

According to officials, trails are more than recreational amenities—they foster healthier lifestyles and connect residents to local commerce. “Trail systems encourage outdoor physical activities like walking, biking, and running, making it easier for people of all ages to incorporate movement into their daily routines,” said Kevin Browne, Parks and Recreation Director.

The first construction phase, set to begin in the summer of 2026, will extend from Morton Road to 10th Street, creating a continuous path connecting Cane Island, Fawn Lake, and the Falls at Green Meadow communities. This work includes accessible features compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, wayfinding signage, benches, and safety signals at roadway crossings.

Local business leaders are already anticipating an economic boost once the trail opens. “Businesses near trailheads benefit from increased visibility and spontaneous foot traffic,” said Browne. Kasper echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the broader vision: “Trails don’t just connect spaces—they connect people to places and places to opportunity”.

Funding for the project comes primarily from the 2021 Park Bonds, with long-term maintenance supported by the city’s annual operating budget. Though no outside partnerships have been established yet, officials remain optimistic about future collaborations as the trail expands and potentially connects to larger regional trail networks.

Construction is expected to conclude in the summer of 2027, and while community volunteer or sponsorship opportunities are not available at this time, residents can stay informed through city updates as construction approaches and milestones are announced.
