Katy ISD Students Shine at Houston World Series of Dog Shows Art Contest
Creativity took center stage for five Katy ISD students recently recognized in the 2025 Dr. Mari Jon Filla Student Exhibit and Contest, a beloved tradition of the Houston World Series of Dog Shows. Their artwork, inspired by the timeless bond between people and dogs, earned them top honors in one of the region’s most unique youth art showcases.
This year’s Katy ISD honorees include:
- Vanessa Qi, Cinco Ranch High School
- Alexander Morales, Schmalz Elementary
- Brenda Guzman, Nelson Junior High
- Lana Xu, Jordan High School
- Maria Suarez, West Memorial Junior High
“These students captured the essence of creativity and compassion through their art,” said Laura Simoneaux, Assistant Director of Fine Arts for Katy ISD. “This recognition not only reflects the creativity of our students, but also the dedication of our outstanding art educators. A Legacy of Art and Community
The Dr. Mari Jon Filla Student Exhibit & Contest has been inspiring student artists for more than four decades. Founded in the early 1980s by Mari Jon Filla, Hazel Arnold, and Rosalie Lisano, the event was created to promote student involvement in honoring dogs as “man’s best friend.” Today, Melissa Sorley and her family continue that mission, carrying forward a legacy of art and compassion.
Over the years, the contest has grown to include more than 1,000 entries annually. Awards are presented in seven categories, including Best in Show, Best in Grade, Commemorative Art Award, Committee Choice Awards, and Excellence Awards. The winning Commemorative Art entry is printed on a T-shirt sold at the Houston World Series of Dog Shows, with proceeds supporting the student exhibit.
Students’ Work on Display at NRG Stadium
The winning entries from Katy ISD students were displayed at NRG Stadium during the Houston World Series of Dog Shows, giving thousands of visitors from across Texas and beyond the chance to admire the young artists’ talents and creativity.
Houston World Series of Dog Shows: A Community Tradition
Now in its 47th year, the Houston World Series of Dog Shows has grown into a five-day event, attracting more than 40,000 spectators and 14,000 entries each July. Beyond breed competitions and agility trials, the event features exhibitions like “Meet the Breeds,” shopping, seminars, and obedience demonstrations—alongside the celebrated student art show.
