Fort Bend County Advances Major South Mason Road and Grand Parkway Improvements Amid Rapid Growth

As neighborhoods continue expanding across Richmond and Fort Bend County, traffic congestion along South Mason Road and the Grand Parkway corridor has become a daily reality for many residents. County leaders say relief is on the way.

Fort Bend County Precinct 4 Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy recently hosted a community engagement meeting to discuss the upcoming South Mason Road and Grand Parkway (SH 99) Improvement Project, giving residents an opportunity to learn more about planned roadway upgrades that aim to improve traffic flow, roadway safety, and accessibility in one of the county’s fastest-growing areas.

Held May 19 at Oakland Elementary School on Waterside Estates Drive in Richmond, the meeting brought together more than 30 residents, engineers, project representatives, and county officials to review construction timelines, anticipated traffic impacts, and future mobility improvements expected to reshape the busy corridor.

For families commuting to work and school, homeowners navigating daily congestion, and businesses serving the growing Richmond area, the project represents more than a roadway upgrade — it reflects Fort Bend County’s broader effort to keep infrastructure aligned with population growth.

What Improvements Are Planned for South Mason Road and SH 99?

According to Fort Bend County Precinct 4, construction is anticipated to begin in Summer 2026, with completion projected for early 2027.

The project is part of the 2017 Fort Bend County Mobility Bond initiative and includes several roadway enhancements designed to improve traffic operations and safety near South Mason Road and Grand Parkway.

Planned improvements include:

  • New dedicated right-turn lanes from South Mason Road and Grand Parkway frontage roads
  • Installation of a new traffic signal at Lewisville Drive
  • Additional pedestrian safety improvements
  • Accessibility enhancements throughout the corridor
  • Increased roadway capacity to accommodate continued development

Residents attending the meeting were able to ask questions directly to representatives from Fort Bend County, project manager AJA, and LJA Engineering while discussing how construction could impact nearby neighborhoods and travel patterns during the buildout phase.

“We are committed to improving mobility, safety, and accessibility throughout Precinct 4,” said Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy. “As Fort Bend County continues to grow, projects like this are critical to ensuring our infrastructure keeps pace with the needs of our residents.”

Grand Parkway Negotiations Mark Major Transportation Milestone

The South Mason Road project comes as Fort Bend County leaders continue advancing larger regional transportation efforts connected to the Grand Parkway system.

Commissioner McCoy and Fort Bend County Commissioners Court recently announced a negotiated agreement regarding primacy over Segment C of the Grand Parkway Project, a proposed 180-mile highway system encircling the Greater Houston region.

Under the agreement, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is expected to assume primary responsibility for construction and operation of the Segment C tollway extension stretching from the intersection of US 59 and SH 99 through Fort Bend County and into Brazoria County.

County officials say the agreement is significant because TxDOT has committed to prioritizing funding and construction of the segment, including multiple direct connectors to major highways throughout the region.

For residents across Fort Bend County, the project could eventually improve regional mobility, reduce travel bottlenecks, and strengthen transportation connections between rapidly developing communities.

“I am excited that after years of conversations with TxDOT and other regional partners that we are finally seeing this project move forward,” McCoy said. “With the commitments that TxDOT has made to prioritize funding and constructing this project sooner rather than later, this represents real progress for our community.”

Fort Bend County will retain primacy over the Grand Parkway segment between the Westpark Tollway and Alternate 90 and expects lane expansion construction in that area to begin later this year.

Why These Projects Matter for Fort Bend County Residents

Fort Bend County is now home to more than 900,000 residents and remains one of the fastest-growing and most diverse counties in the nation. As new neighborhoods, schools, retail centers, and businesses continue developing throughout Richmond and surrounding communities, transportation infrastructure has become one of the region’s most pressing concerns.

Projects like the South Mason Road and Grand Parkway improvements are intended not only to ease congestion, but also to support emergency response access, improve pedestrian safety, and help maintain connectivity for residents navigating the county’s continued expansion.

For many homeowners and families living near SH 99, the improvements signal long-term investment in the community’s future and an acknowledgment of the challenges that come with rapid growth.
