Daylight Saving Time Ends November 1: Why Cypress Meadow Residents May Notice More Streetlight Outages and How to Report Them

Cypress Meadow  /   Katy / Fulshear
October 15 2026

For residents of Cypress Meadow, shorter days and earlier sunsets are a familiar part of fall, but they can also bring attention to something that often goes unnoticed during the brighter months: streetlights that have stopped working. With daylight saving time ending on Sunday, November 1, 2026, neighborhood streets will soon be getting darker an hour earlier, making functioning streetlights especially important for evening walks, neighborhood traffic and families returning home after sunset.

At 2 a.m. on November 1, clocks will move back one hour to 1 a.m., marking the return to standard time. While residents gain an extra hour of sleep that Sunday morning, sunset will appear approximately one hour earlier on the clock. Across the Greater Houston area, that means more people will be driving, walking dogs, exercising and navigating neighborhood streets after dark.

For homeowners in Cypress Meadow, the seasonal change is also a good opportunity to take a closer look at neighborhood lighting and report streetlight outages that may have gone unnoticed throughout the summer.

Why Streetlight Outages Become More Noticeable After Daylight Saving Time Ends

Streetlights do not necessarily fail more frequently when daylight saving time ends. Instead, earlier darkness makes existing outages easier to spot.

A streetlight that was barely noticeable during an evening walk in August may become much more obvious in November, particularly near intersections, neighborhood entrances, sidewalks, parks and community mailboxes.

Working streetlights help drivers see pedestrians, cyclists and roadway conditions, while providing better visibility for residents spending time outdoors after sunset. Dark stretches of neighborhood streets can be particularly concerning for families with children, older residents and anyone returning home during evening hours.

Rather than assuming someone else has already reported a problem, residents can help bring attention to malfunctioning lights by submitting an outage report.

How to Report a Streetlight Outage to CenterPoint Energy

Residents who notice a streetlight that is out, flickering, unusually dim or staying on during daylight hours can report the problem directly to CenterPoint Energy, which maintains streetlights throughout much of the Greater Houston area.

The company offers an online reporting system that allows residents to identify the affected streetlight and submit a repair request without contacting their homeowners association or waiting for someone else to report it.

To report a streetlight outage online, visit the CenterPoint Energy Streetlight Outage Reporting Tool. Residents can also access reporting options through CenterPoint Energy's official streetlight outage webpage.

One helpful detail to know before submitting a report is the streetlight's identification number. Most CenterPoint-maintained streetlights have a six-digit number displayed on a small metal tag or identification plate attached to the pole, typically about six feet above the ground. The number helps CenterPoint identify the exact light requiring attention.

If the number is missing or difficult to read, residents can provide the nearest street address, intersection or block number to help locate the problem. There is no need to approach a damaged pole or enter an unsafe area to obtain the information.

The reporting system also allows residents to provide contact information and request email notification when the repair is completed. CenterPoint can be reached by telephone at 713-207-2222 for those who prefer to report an outage by phone.

How Long Does It Take CenterPoint to Repair a Streetlight?

According to CenterPoint Energy's streetlight outage reporting information, routine repairs are generally expected to take approximately three days. More complicated problems, including extensive equipment damage or underground cable failures, can take two to four weeks to resolve.

Actual repair times depend on the nature of the problem, and residents should retain their reporting reference number when one is provided.

It is also important to distinguish a streetlight outage from a household power outage. The two are reported separately, and restoring electricity to nearby homes does not necessarily mean a malfunctioning streetlight has been repaired.

A Small Way to Help Keep Safe and Well-Lit

As November approaches, Cypress Meadow residents may find themselves noticing familiar neighborhood streets in a different light, particularly during evening commutes, after-school activities and walks around the block.

Reporting a streetlight outage takes only a few minutes, but it can help address an issue affecting an entire section of the neighborhood. It is a simple way for residents to look out for their neighbors and contribute to a community where everyone can feel more comfortable getting around after dark.

With clocks falling back on November 1, now is a good time to pay attention to streetlights along neighborhood roads, entrances and sidewalks. Residents are encouraged to share CenterPoint Energy's online reporting information with neighbors who may not know how to request a repair.
