Arrest Made After Fatal Stray Bullet Killed The Colonies Resident Inside Her Home

May 15 2026

For residents in The Colonies, the March shooting along Langham Creek was the kind of tragedy that felt impossible until it happened close to home.

An 84-year-old woman was inside her house when a bullet came through the home and struck her. Neighbors who had long heard occasional gunfire near the bayou suddenly found themselves confronting a far more sobering reality: a single reckless shot had crossed into a residential neighborhood and turned deadly.

Now, Harris County authorities say an arrest has been made in the case.

In a May 8 update shared on social media, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced that 19-year-old Joshua Ramos has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the March 7 shooting in the 5600 block of Saddlebred Drive that resulted in the death of Joanne Bennett, 84.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, investigators allege Ramos recklessly fired a weapon in the residential area, with the round ultimately striking Bennett inside her home. Members of HCSO’s Violent Criminals Apprehension Team, assisted by the Texas Department of Public Safety, located and arrested Ramos, who was booked into the Harris County Jail.

The update follows weeks of investigation after the shooting initially left many residents stunned and searching for answers.

An Incident That Hit Close to Home in The Colonies

When news first spread in March that a stray bullet had traveled into a home near Langham Creek, the incident immediately sparked concern throughout The Colonies, Bradford Colony, Charlestown Colony, and nearby West Houston neighborhoods.

Many residents said they had heard gunfire near the bayou corridor before, but few imagined a bullet could end up inside someone’s home.

The tragedy became especially unsettling because Bennett was not outside, near the creek, or involved in any dispute. She was at home.

For families living along Langham Creek, it changed the way many people thought about what had previously been dismissed by some as “just hearing shots in the distance.”

Why Gunfire Near Bayou Corridors Is So Dangerous

The neighborhoods surrounding Langham Creek back up to flood control channels, wooded areas, and open green space. While those spaces are part of what many residents appreciate about the area, law enforcement officials and firearm safety experts have long warned that they are not safe places for recreational shooting.

Bullets can travel significant distances, ricochet off hard surfaces or water, and continue far beyond where the shooter intended.

In neighborhoods where homes sit directly along creek corridors, a stray round does not have to travel far to become deadly.

Following the March incident, local law enforcement agencies, neighborhood HOAs, MUD district leaders, and residents throughout the Langham Creek corridor have continued working together to address ongoing concerns about reckless firearm discharge and unsafe activity near open-access bayou and flood control areas in unincorporated portions of Harris County.

Residents Continue Calling for Awareness and Reporting

While the arrest brings an important development in the investigation, the case has also left many residents hoping it leads to greater awareness about reckless firearm use near residential neighborhoods.

Community leaders and residents have continued encouraging neighbors to report gunfire and suspicious activity when it occurs rather than assuming someone else will call.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that reckless firearm discharge can carry serious criminal consequences under Texas law, particularly when another person is injured or killed.

For many in The Colonies, the tragedy involving Joanne Bennett remains a painful reminder that careless decisions made outside a neighborhood can forever alter lives inside it.

As the criminal case moves through the court system, many residents say they are continuing to focus on something much simpler: making sure their neighborhood remains a place where families feel safe in their own homes.

Residents can report non-emergency suspicious activity to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at 713-221-6000 or call 911 in emergencies.
