For a group of local teenagers, summer camp meant more than games and time away from school. It meant learning how to handle a fire hose, understanding the teamwork behind an emergency response and seeing firsthand what it takes to serve a community.

The Westlake Fire Department recently completed its 6th Annual Junior Fire Academy, wrapping up five days of hands-on instruction, new experiences and personal growth for young participants ages 12 to 15.

For families in Westfield, the academy offered something increasingly valuable: a structured opportunity for young people to step outside their comfort zones, learn directly from first responders and discover how leadership, preparation and teamwork can make a difference during an emergency.

A Week Inside the World of Fire and EMS

Held July 27-31, 2026, at the Westlake Fire Department on Saums Road, the Junior Fire Academy introduced campers to the daily responsibilities of firefighters, emergency medical personnel and other public safety professionals.

Throughout the week, participants gained hands-on knowledge through activities designed to reflect real emergency service training. The academy included lessons and demonstrations involving firefighting equipment, emergency medical services, first aid, fire safety, search-and-rescue techniques, hose operations and team-based response exercises.

For many campers, the week was filled with firsts. Some handled emergency equipment for the first time, while others learned how firefighters communicate under pressure or how EMS professionals assess and respond to medical situations.

Those activities were designed to be engaging, but they also carried a larger purpose. The program encouraged participants to listen carefully, take responsibility, work as a team and remain calm while completing unfamiliar challenges.

Confidence That Extends Beyond the Fire Station

While the Westlake Junior Fire Academy provides an introduction to careers in firefighting and emergency medicine, its impact is not limited to students who already dream of becoming first responders.

Organizers said the academy is also about helping young people build confidence, develop practical skills and form lasting friendships. Over the course of the week, participants learned to rely on one another, communicate clearly and approach new tasks with greater assurance.

Those lessons can remain useful well beyond the camp itself. Knowing basic first aid, understanding fire prevention and recognizing how emergency responders operate can help young residents become more prepared at home, at school and throughout the community.

For youth in Westfield, spending a week alongside local firefighters also created a personal connection to the people behind the uniforms, fire engines and ambulances they may see responding throughout the area.

Community Partners Help Make the Academy Possible

The Junior Fire Academy depended on support from Westlake Fire Department personnel, EMS professionals, community partners, instructors and volunteers who contributed their time and expertise throughout the week.

Their involvement gave campers access to a broad range of emergency service knowledge while showing them how different agencies and professionals work together to protect residents.

The department also thanked parents and guardians for trusting the academy staff with their children and supporting their participation in the five-day program. That partnership between families and first responders remains central to the academy’s success and its ability to return each summer.

Programs such as the Westlake Junior Fire Academy can also strengthen relationships between emergency service agencies and the neighborhoods they serve. By inviting young people into the station and allowing them to participate in realistic training activities, departments can help residents better understand the preparation, discipline and teamwork involved in public safety work.

The Next Junior Fire Academy Is Already Scheduled

Following the completion of this summer’s academy, the Westlake Fire Department has announced dates for next year’s program.

The 7th Annual Westlake Junior Fire Academy is scheduled for July 26-30, 2027.

Registration details, eligibility requirements, costs and application deadlines have not yet been announced. Because space has been limited in previous years and priority placement has been offered to qualifying youth who live within the Westlake Fire Department service district, interested families should watch for future enrollment information.
