Knowing what to do during the first few minutes of a medical emergency can make an ordinary neighbor, parent, coach or caregiver an important part of the response before professional help arrives.

For residents of Westfield, the Westlake Volunteer Fire Department is offering a hands-on opportunity to become better prepared. The department will host a First Aid/CPR/AED Training Class at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, with instruction focused on practical skills participants may one day need at home, at work or somewhere in the community.

“Every second counts. Every person can make a difference,” the Westlake Volunteer Fire Department shared while announcing the class.

What the Westlake CPR and First Aid Training Covers

The Sept. 12 training is designed to introduce participants to several common emergency-response skills, including:

• CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Wound care
• Choking relief
• AED training

Those are skills that can become relevant in settings residents encounter every day — from family gatherings and youth activities to workplaces, restaurants and neighborhood events.

For Westfield families, learning CPR and basic first aid can also provide another layer of preparedness at home. Emergencies are rarely scheduled, and knowing how to respond while emergency medical services are on the way can help residents feel more capable when quick action matters.

Free Training Certificate or American Red Cross CPR Card Available

Participants have two certification options following the Westlake Fire Department training.

A Westlake Safety Certificate is available at no cost, giving residents a free way to complete the training and build lifesaving skills.

Those who want an American Red Cross CPR card may obtain one for $45 cash. According to the department's event information, that certification is valid for two years and recognized nationwide.

That option may be especially useful for people whose jobs, volunteer roles, coaching positions or other responsibilities require CPR certification.

A Practical Skill That Can Stay With Residents

CPR and first aid classes can have an impact well beyond the training room. A resident who learns how to recognize an emergency, begin CPR, assist someone who is choking or use an automated external defibrillator may someday be the person standing closest when help is needed.

That is part of what makes the Westlake Volunteer Fire Department's training opportunity particularly relevant for Westfield residents. It is not simply another weekend event; it is a chance to gain knowledge that can travel with participants wherever they go.

The department summed up that goal simply in its announcement: “Learn CPR. Save a life.”
