Walmart Potranco Road Remodel: $1.8 Million Renovation Planned for Far West San Antonio Store in 2027
Residents in far West San Antonio can expect significant changes at the Walmart Supercenter on Potranco Road as the retailer prepares for a $1.8 million renovation beginning in early 2027.
Construction filings identify the project as an interior and exterior remodel of Walmart Store No. 3888 at 11210 Potranco Road, near the growing neighborhoods and commercial corridors of western Bexar County. Work is currently scheduled to begin Feb. 21, 2027, and reach completion by June 10, 2027.
For nearby families, commuters and local businesses, the project signals another substantial investment along Potranco Road, where residential development and retail activity have continued to expand.
What Is Planned at the Potranco Road Walmart?
The renovation will affect portions of the existing 203,205-square-foot Supercenter.
Project documents list 9,650 square feet of remodeled space and 9,215 square feet of added space. The filing describes the work broadly as an interior and exterior renovation, although detailed plans for individual departments or customer areas have not yet been released.
Because the project includes both remodeled space and an addition, shoppers could eventually see more than cosmetic changes. However, the construction filing does not specify which departments will be expanded, relocated or redesigned.
The estimated construction cost is $1.8 million.
Part of Walmart’s Nationwide Store Modernization Program
The Potranco Road renovation comes as Walmart moves forward with one of its largest recent store-improvement programs.
In an April 16, 2026 announcement, the company said it planned to remodel more than 650 Walmart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets across the United States during the year. Walmart also announced approximately 20 new store openings scheduled for 2026 and early 2027.
The remodeling initiative builds on a commitment Walmart made in early 2024 to open or convert more than 150 locations while continuing to update existing stores.
For customers, the national program is intended to make stores easier to navigate while improving the connection between traditional in-store shopping, curbside pickup, delivery and Walmart’s mobile app.
What Shoppers May See After the Remodel
Walmart has not released a store-specific list of improvements for the Potranco Road location. However, the company said customers at renovated stores nationwide may notice wider aisles, updated floor plans, refreshed product displays and expanded merchandise selections.
Some remodeled locations are also receiving improvements such as:
- Expanded pickup and delivery operations
- Updated pharmacies and Vision Centers
- Private pharmacy consultation rooms
- New digital shopping displays and online-ordering tools
- Modern interior and exterior signs
- Parking lot and landscaping improvements
- Brighter lighting and updated fixtures
The exact combination of features can vary by store, and not every improvement announced nationally will necessarily be included in the San Antonio project.
Still, the planned addition and renovation suggest the Potranco Road Walmart could receive meaningful operational changes rather than a simple paint-and-signage refresh.
Digital Shopping Is Becoming a Larger Part of the Store Experience
Walmart’s remodeling strategy also reflects the changing way families shop for groceries, household supplies, prescriptions and everyday essentials.
The retailer has increasingly integrated its stores with the Walmart app, allowing shoppers to locate products by aisle, scan items for prices, view promotions, refill prescriptions and schedule certain services.
Customers can also use the app to arrange curbside pickup or home delivery. Walmart said its store network allows the company to reach 95% of U.S. households with delivery in three hours or less.
Select services, including Scan & Go, are limited to Walmart+ members, while delivery times and availability can vary by location.
These digital tools are especially relevant in fast-growing areas such as far West San Antonio, where residents may rely on a mix of in-store shopping, pickup and delivery depending on traffic, work schedules and family needs.
What the Project Could Mean for Potranco Road
The Walmart remodel is another sign of continued commercial investment along the Potranco Road corridor.
The area has experienced sustained residential growth, bringing more families, schools, restaurants, medical offices and retailers to communities west of Loop 1604. Updating an established Supercenter may help Walmart respond to increased customer volume and changing shopping habits in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Construction projects of this size can also create temporary jobs and support local contractors during development. Walmart has said its broader investment program is designed to support both construction employment and long-term positions in retail, pharmacy and store leadership.
The company has not announced whether the Potranco Road renovation will create additional permanent jobs.
What Happens Next
Construction is currently scheduled to take place from Feb. 21 through June 10, 2027. Those dates may change as planning, permitting and contractor schedules develop.
The store may remain open during at least part of the renovation, as many Walmart remodels are completed in phases. However, Walmart has not yet announced operating-hour changes, department closures or temporary customer-access plans for this location.
Residents who regularly shop at the Potranco Road Walmart should watch for in-store notices as the construction date approaches.
