San Antonio Extends Downtown Thursday Events and Free Parking Through the End of 2026
Thursday nights downtown are sticking around a little longer.
The City of San Antonio has extended its Downtown Thursday pilot program through the end of 2026, continuing a weekly mix of free parking, arts and cultural programming, live entertainment, restaurant specials and family-friendly activities.
The program was originally scheduled to run from June through the end of August. Its extension gives residents additional opportunities to plan an evening downtown during the fall and holiday seasons without beginning the night by circling for parking.
How free Downtown Thursday parking works
Visitors can park free at participating city-owned parking facilities from 5 p.m. Thursday until 2 a.m. Friday.
Not every municipal garage is included on every date, and exclusions may apply during major performances, conventions or other high-demand events. The Houston Street Garage is not part of the regular free-parking program.
Visitors should check the city’s current Downtown Thursday parking map before leaving home rather than assuming a particular garage will be free.
On select Thursdays, the program also offers free parking in Alamodome Lot A and complimentary shuttle service into the center of downtown. The Local SATX shuttle connects riders with destinations including Hemisfair, La Villita, the Torch of Friendship and The Alamo.
When available, shuttles generally run every 15 minutes between 5 and 11 p.m.
More than a free-parking program
Downtown Thursday was created to bring multiple downtown activities together under one easily recognizable weekly program.
Participating restaurants, bars, coffee shops, retailers, museums, tour operators and entertainment venues offer Thursday specials or schedule activities that give visitors a reason to explore more than one destination.
Depending on the week, the lineup may include live music, food trucks, performances, outdoor activities, cultural programming, happy-hour specials, shopping offers and events hosted by downtown partners.
The city launched the pilot in June with partners including Centro San Antonio, Hemisfair, Main Plaza, The Local SATX, the Fairmount Hotel, the Majestic Theatre and downtown restaurants and bars. Seasonal activities at Travis Park and Legacy Park were also incorporated into the schedule.
Downtown Thursday replaced the city’s seasonal Downtown Tuesday parking initiative, shifting the free-parking period to a night when restaurants and entertainment venues could build coordinated programming around it.
Why the extension matters for downtown businesses
For locally owned restaurants, shops and entertainment venues, a weekly event series can help create more consistent foot traffic outside of major conventions, Spurs games and large festivals.
Parking cost and uncertainty can be enough to discourage residents from making an informal downtown trip, particularly when they have dining and entertainment choices closer to home. A predictable free-parking window removes one of those barriers.
The program also encourages visitors to combine activities. A family might attend a free outdoor event, eat at a nearby restaurant and stop at a shop or cultural venue rather than driving downtown for a single destination.
Participating businesses can submit existing Thursday events and offers for inclusion or ask to join the program through the city’s Downtown Thursday website.
Planning a Thursday night downtown
The program’s extension does not mean every event or transportation option will operate every Thursday. Schedules, parking availability and shuttle dates can change around conventions, theater performances, construction and large public events.
Before heading downtown, visitors should:
- Review the current event and partner-special listings
- Confirm that the intended garage is participating
- Check the Alamodome shuttle schedule when applicable
- Review street closures and construction notices
- Consider VIA Metropolitan Transit, rideshare, cycling or walking
- Verify event admission requirements, since not every partner activity is free
Updated events, offers and parking details are available through the official Downtown Thursday program page.
With the pilot now continuing through December, San Antonio residents have several more months to decide what a downtown Thursday looks like for them—whether that means dinner and a show, live music in a public plaza or simply an evening walk along the River Walk.
