Crate & Barrel Opens First San Antonio Store at The Shops at La Cantera

San Antonio shoppers no longer need to make the drive to Austin or Dallas to visit Crate & Barrel.

The contemporary home furnishings retailer opened its first San Antonio store on August 20 at The Shops at La Cantera, adding another major home and lifestyle brand to the Northwest Side shopping center.

The new store is located at 15900 La Cantera Parkway, Unit 12050. The approximately 20,000-square-foot location spans two levels and carries furniture, kitchenware, tableware, bedding, lighting, rugs, decorative accessories and products from the company’s Crate & Kids collection.

For San Antonio area homeowners, the opening creates a new local option for everything from a single serving bowl to a full-room redesign.

What shoppers will find inside San Antonio’s Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel is best known for contemporary furniture and housewares that balance practical use with modern design.

The La Cantera store carries furnishings for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and outdoor spaces, along with cookware, glassware, linens and entertaining essentials. Shoppers will also find lighting, including chandeliers, pendants, sconces, floor lamps and table lamps.

Crate & Kids expands the selection to nurseries, children’s bedrooms and family spaces with furniture, bedding, toys, storage and décor designed for younger members of the household.

The store also offers complimentary design assistance. Customers can bring in a quick question, work with a designer on a mood board or room layout, or arrange a more extensive consultation. Free fabric swatches are available for shoppers who want to compare colors and materials at home before making a decision.

A brand that began with crates, barrels and a European honeymoon

Crate & Barrel’s story dates to 1962, when Gordon and Carole Segal returned from their honeymoon in Europe with an idea: bring the simple, useful and attractive housewares they encountered overseas to American shoppers.

The couple opened their first store in an old elevator factory on Wells Street in Chicago. With little money available for traditional store fixtures, merchandise was displayed on the shipping crates and barrels in which it arrived. Those makeshift displays ultimately gave the company its name.

More than six decades later, Crate & Barrel works with over 100 artists and designers around the world. Its products are made in dozens of countries, and the company operates more than 100 stores and franchise locations across nine countries.

The company acquired children’s furniture and toy retailer The Land of Nod in 2001. That brand was eventually folded into the company and relaunched as Crate & Kids in 2018.

La Cantera store adds events and design services

In addition to regular shopping, the San Antonio location plans to host in-store experiences similar to those offered at other Crate & Barrel stores. These can include registry events, design presentations, demonstrations, tastings and seasonal activities.

The store’s opening schedule included live chain-stitch embroidery on August 22, followed by a wine tasting and pairing event on August 29. Additional registry and wedding-planning events are scheduled throughout the fall.

Customers can review current hours, upcoming events and design-consultation availability through the official La Cantera Crate & Barrel page.

The San Antonio store is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, according to the retailer.

For a city where homeowners regularly blend old, new, traditional and contemporary styles, Crate & Barrel’s arrival adds another place to gather ideas—and to see how those ideas might actually look at home.
