Gunn Family Coyote Dog Park Reopens at The Rock Following Tornado Repairs

San Antonio / New Braunfels  /  San Antonio / New Braunfels
August 21 2026

Dogs and their people can once again return to one of San Antonio’s largest off-leash parks.

The Gunn Family Coyote Dog Park at The Rock at La Cantera reopened August 21 following more than a month of storm-related repairs. The 7.5-acre public park had been closed since a July 15 tornado damaged portions of the La Cantera and The Rim area.

Spurs Sports & Entertainment, which maintains the park, completed the restoration work before welcoming visitors back.

Bexar County’s official park page now lists the dog park as open, along with the adjacent Gunn Family Park and walking trails.

What visitors will find at Coyote Dog Park

Gunn Family Coyote Dog Park is located at 15915 Old Fredericksburg Road and is free to use.

The property includes:

  • Separate areas for large and small dogs
  • A dog agility course
  • Walking trails
  • Dog-wash stations
  • Seating and picnic tables
  • Open lawn areas
  • Play mounds
  • Waste bags and disposal stations

Dogs measuring 17 inches or less use the designated small-dog area.

The park’s walking paths connect with the Leon Creek Greenway trail system and nearby La Cantera Town Center, giving visitors the option to extend their outing beyond the fenced dog areas.

Summer hours, which remain in effect through October 31, are 8 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Winter hours from November 1 through March 31 are 8 a.m.–6 p.m.

A public park connected to The Rock at La Cantera

The dog park is part of the broader public space surrounding The Rock at La Cantera, the 45-acre campus developed by Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

The Rock is anchored by the Victory Capital Performance Center, the San Antonio Spurs’ training facility. The campus also includes Frost Plaza, restaurants, retail, outdoor gathering areas and community trails.

While parts of the performance center and Spurs Club are restricted, the dog park, Gunn Family Park, walking trails, splash pad and Frost Plaza are community amenities.

The dog park has become one of the campus’s most frequently used public spaces, drawing an estimated 50,000 visitors annually, according to Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

July tornado forced temporary closure

The tornado that moved through Northwest San Antonio on July 15 damaged areas around La Cantera and The Rim, including portions of The Rock’s landscaping and outdoor facilities.

The dog park remained closed while crews cleared debris, evaluated affected areas and completed repairs. Some of the tree canopy was lost or damaged, which may leave portions of the park with less shade than returning visitors remember.

The reopening restores an important outdoor option for residents in the La Cantera, Stone Oak, Leon Springs and Northwest San Antonio areas, particularly for people who do not have large fenced yards where their dogs can run off leash.

Rules to know before visiting

Bexar County reminds visitors that owners remain legally responsible for their dogs and any injuries or damage they cause.

Dogs must be licensed, vaccinated and healthy. Puppies younger than four months and dogs in heat are not permitted. Dogs must remain under voice control, wear collars and identification tags, and be leashed before entering and leaving the fenced areas.

Owners must stay inside the park with their dogs, keep them in sight and remove any dog showing aggression. Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Food and beverages in glass containers are prohibited, although training treats are permitted. Owners are also expected to clean up after their pets and fill any holes they dig.

The complete rules and current operating status are available on the official Bexar County dog park page. Updates affecting other parts of the campus are posted on The Rock’s property-status page.

After an unexpected closure during the height of summer, the park’s reopening gives local dogs—and the neighbors who bring them—room to run, walk and reconnect.
