Volaris Launches First Flight from San Antonio Airport’s New Terminal A Expansion, Expanding Travel Options to Mexico

San Antonio travelers are already beginning to see—and feel—the impact of major upgrades at San Antonio International Airport (SAT), as the newly expanded Terminal A officially welcomed its first departing flight. For families, business travelers, and those frequently traveling between Texas and Mexico, the changes signal more than just construction progress—they represent improved access, comfort, and connectivity.

The milestone moment came on April 13, when Volaris became the first airline to depart from the Terminal A Gate Expansion, marking a significant step forward in the City of San Antonio Aviation Department’s broader effort to modernize and grow the airport. For a region where international travel—especially to Mexico—is deeply tied to family, culture, and commerce, the expansion reflects both demand and long-term investment in the community.

Terminal A Expansion Enhances Travel Experience at San Antonio International Airport

The Terminal A Gate Expansion introduces a range of new features designed to improve both efficiency and the passenger experience at SAT. Among the most notable additions is a new Ground Load Facility, which increases operational capacity and allows the airport to accommodate more flights and passengers.

Travelers passing through the updated terminal will also find expanded passenger areas and additional concessions, offering more space and dining options during peak travel times. For international travelers, the addition of a Federal Inspection Station supports smoother arrivals from abroad, an important feature as San Antonio continues to grow its global connections.

The expansion also prioritizes accessibility and comfort. A newly added multi-sensory environment provides a calming space for travelers who may need a quieter, more controlled setting, while a dedicated service animal and pet relief room ensures accommodations for passengers traveling with animals.

Together, these enhancements are part of SAT’s broader initiative to “Elevate SAT,” a long-term vision focused on improving infrastructure, passenger satisfaction, and regional connectivity.

New Volaris Flights Strengthen San Antonio to Mexico Travel Options

The expansion comes at a time when demand for travel between San Antonio and Mexico continues to grow. Beginning June 2, 2026, Volaris will launch new nonstop service from San Antonio International Airport to Querétaro International Airport (QRO), operating three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

“We’re excited to see expanded service to Mexico, a destination that continues to be one of the most important and in-demand markets for San Antonio travelers,” said Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports for the City of San Antonio Aviation Department. “This expanded service offers greater convenience and reflects the strong demand we continue to see from our community.”

The new route is expected to serve a wide range of travelers, from those visiting family and friends to business professionals and tourists exploring central Mexico. Volaris, known for its ultra-low-cost model and modern Airbus A320 fleet, continues to expand its presence across Texas, reinforcing San Antonio’s role as a key gateway.

“Our commitment to Texas, one of our most important markets, continues to grow with the launch of new routes designed to better serve our visiting friends and relatives customers,” said Holger Blankenstein, Executive Vice President at Volaris. “This new service to San Antonio further strengthens our network in the Lone Star State and reflects our long-term vision of connecting communities across borders through low-cost and reliable air travel.”

In addition to Volaris’ new route, Viva also offers nonstop service to Querétaro, bringing total weekly service between the two cities to six days a week—giving travelers more flexibility than ever before.

Why This Matters for San Antonio Residents

For San Antonio residents, these developments go beyond convenience. Increased air service and modernized infrastructure often translate into economic growth, stronger tourism, and enhanced business opportunities. For families with ties to Mexico, expanded nonstop flights can mean easier, more affordable trips to visit loved ones.

“Increased connectivity to Mexico gives travelers flying out of SAT more convenient ways to visit family, do business and explore new destinations in one of our key markets,” said Jacob Tyler, Air Service Administrator for the City of San Antonio Aviation Department. “We appreciate Volaris’ continued investment in our community as they help us grow service in destinations that matter to our region.”

The Terminal A Gate Expansion also reflects San Antonio’s continued growth as a major metropolitan area, positioning the airport to meet rising passenger demand while improving the overall travel experience.

What Happens Next at SAT

The April debut of the Terminal A Gate Expansion is just one step in a broader, ongoing effort to enhance San Antonio International Airport. As additional airlines begin utilizing the expanded space and more passengers pass through the upgraded terminal, residents can expect continued improvements tied to capacity, comfort, and global connectivity.

For those planning summer travel—especially to Mexico—the timing of the new Volaris route and expanded terminal access offers immediate benefits.

As San Antonio continues to grow, investments like these help ensure the city remains connected, competitive, and accessible for years to come.
