UNIQLO Is Coming to San Antonio: Japanese Clothing Retailer Plans First San Antonio Store at North Star Mall
San Antonio shoppers who have been waiting for a local UNIQLO will no longer have to plan a trip to Houston or North Texas to visit one.
The Japanese clothing retailer is preparing to open its first San Antonio store inside North Star Mall at 7400 San Pedro Ave., according to a state construction filing. The planned location would give residents across San Antonio and Bexar County direct access to a global brand known for simple, practical clothing designed for everyday life.
The 16,011-square-foot UNIQLO North Star Mall store represents an estimated investment of $2.3 million. Construction is currently scheduled to begin March 22, 2027, with work expected to be completed by July 9, 2027.
An official grand opening date has not been announced, and construction schedules listed in state filings can change. Still, the filing provides the clearest indication yet that UNIQLO is headed to San Antonio.
What UNIQLO’s San Antonio store could offer shoppers
UNIQLO sells clothing for women, men, children and babies, with an emphasis on versatile wardrobe staples rather than rapidly changing fashion trends.
Its stores typically carry T-shirts, jeans, trousers, dresses, sweaters, outerwear, active clothing, loungewear, undergarments and accessories. Many pieces are intentionally understated, making them easy to wear at work, at home or while traveling.
That practical approach is especially well suited to San Antonio, where shoppers often need clothing that can handle warm temperatures, strong air conditioning and the occasional cold front within the same season.
Among the retailer’s most recognizable products are AIRism garments designed to feel lightweight in warm or humid conditions, HEATTECH cold-weather layers and Ultra Light Down jackets that provide warmth without the weight of traditional outerwear. UNIQLO also offers UV-protection clothing, wrinkle-resistant shirts and stretch fabrics developed for comfort and movement.
The company describes this broader philosophy as “LifeWear”—clothing designed to be useful, comfortable and continually improved rather than built around prominent logos or short-lived trends.
A Japanese brand with a growing global reach
UNIQLO’s roots date to 1949, when the business that eventually became Fast Retailing was founded in Japan. The first store operating under the UNIQLO name opened in Hiroshima in 1984, and the company opened its first store outside Japan in London in 2001.
Since then, UNIQLO has grown into one of the world’s largest apparel retailers. As of May 31, 2026, the company operated 2,529 UNIQLO stores worldwide, including 1,744 locations outside Japan. Its United States footprint had reached 83 stores by that date.
The brand has also become known for collaborations that bring art, pop culture and designer fashion into otherwise accessible everyday collections. Past offerings have included graphic T-shirts and limited collections developed with artists, museums, filmmakers and internationally recognized designers.
For shoppers, the result is a store that often feels less like a traditional department-store clothing section and more like a carefully organized collection of building blocks for a wardrobe.
UNIQLO continues expanding across Texas
The North Star Mall project is part of a relatively new chapter in UNIQLO’s American growth.
The retailer entered Texas in 2024, announcing plans to open five stores in the state during its first wave of expansion. Those locations brought UNIQLO to the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth areas, including stores serving Houston, Sugar Land, Dallas, Frisco and Arlington.
Additional Texas growth is now taking shape. A UNIQLO store is planned for Barton Creek Square in Austin, while another Houston-area location is listed as coming soon at The Galleria. The planned North Star Mall store would expand the brand into San Antonio and strengthen its presence along the Texas Triangle.
For San Antonio residents, that means a brand once concentrated largely in major coastal markets is becoming much easier to shop close to home.
Why North Star Mall makes sense for UNIQLO
North Star Mall remains one of San Antonio’s best-known regional shopping destinations, with a central location near Loop 410, U.S. 281 and San Antonio International Airport.
A store of more than 16,000 square feet would give UNIQLO enough room to present a broad assortment of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing rather than a limited boutique selection. The state filing describes interior improvements that include new partitions, restrooms, finishes and flooring.
The investment also adds another recognizable international retailer to the San Pedro Avenue shopping corridor at a time when established malls are competing by bringing in brands that residents previously had to find in other cities or online.
UNIQLO has not yet disclosed where inside North Star Mall the store will be located.
What happens next
Construction is expected to run from spring through early summer 2027. After the interior work is completed, the retailer would still need to install merchandise, train employees and prepare the store for customers before opening.
Residents can expect more information about the San Antonio UNIQLO opening date, hiring opportunities, store hours and any grand opening promotions as the project moves forward.
For now, the filing signals that one of the world’s most recognizable everyday clothing brands is preparing to make San Antonio part of its expanding Texas presence.
