TxDOT Road Closure on Melton Road Expected Through June 26 Near FM 1488 in Magnolia Area
Drivers in and around Magnolia Springs will want to plan ahead over the next several weeks as a temporary road closure along Melton Road is expected to affect traffic patterns near FM 1488 and Smith Street.
According to a notice shared May 28 by the City of Magnolia following a last-minute update from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Melton Road will be fully closed between Smith Street and FM 1488 from May 28 through June 26. The closure will remain in place both day and night during the project timeline.
For many Magnolia-area residents, the affected corridor serves as a common connector for school drop-offs, commuting, errands, and access to nearby businesses along FM 1488. With summer travel already increasing throughout the region, the extended closure is expected to create delays, particularly during peak traffic hours.
Why TxDOT Is Closing Melton Road
TxDOT says the temporary closure is necessary to prepare intersection traffic lights for an upcoming traffic switch and to stage equipment and materials needed for continued work at the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) intersection nearby.
The project is part of ongoing infrastructure and transportation improvements in the rapidly growing Magnolia area, where increased residential growth and traffic volume have placed additional pressure on key roadways and rail crossings.
While the closure may create short-term inconvenience, the work is intended to support safer and more efficient traffic flow in the future.
What Residents Should Expect
The closure area stretches between Smith Street and FM 1488, with barricades and work zones remaining active around the clock throughout the duration of the project.
Residents traveling near the construction area should expect:
- Detours and alternate traffic patterns
- Longer commute times near FM 1488
- Increased congestion on nearby roads
- Active construction crews and equipment in the area
Drivers are encouraged to leave earlier when possible and use alternate routes to avoid delays.
The City also reminded motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling through nearby work zones to help protect roadway crews and fellow drivers.

As Magnolia and surrounding communities continue to grow, road projects like this one are becoming more common across the area. Improvements to major corridors, intersections, and railroad crossings are aimed at keeping pace with increasing traffic demands tied to new neighborhoods, businesses, and commercial development.
For Magnolia Springs residents, staying informed about temporary roadway impacts can help reduce frustration and improve day-to-day travel planning during construction periods.
Additional updates regarding traffic switches and future construction phases are expected as work continues at the UPRR intersection.
