Tomball High School Baseball Heads Back to UIL State Championship Game, Extending Historic Run
For the third straight season, Tomball High School Baseball will play for a state championship.
The Tomball Cougars punched their ticket back to the UIL Class 6A Division II State Championship Game after defeating Flower Mound's Marcus High School 8-6 in the decisive game of their state semifinal series, sending the program back to Dell Diamond and securing the school's third consecutive appearance in the state title game.
For Tomball families, students, alumni and longtime supporters, the achievement represents more than another postseason victory. It marks the continuation of a culture that has turned the Cougars into one of Texas' most respected baseball programs while giving the community another opportunity to rally around a team that has become a source of hometown pride.
Tomball Baseball Continues Historic State Championship Run
Few programs in Texas high school baseball can match what Tomball has accomplished over the past three seasons.
The Cougars captured the UIL Class 6A State Championship in 2024, finished as state runner-up in 2025, and have now earned a third consecutive trip to the UIL State Championship Game in 2026. The program previously won a state title in 2013 and has now reached the UIL State Baseball Tournament in 2013, 2015, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Under Head Coach Doug Rush, who has guided the program since 2011, Tomball has built a reputation for disciplined play, elite pitching and an ability to perform under pressure. That resilience was on display again throughout the postseason and particularly during the semifinal series against Marcus High School.
After suffering its first loss of the season in Game 1 of the series, Tomball responded with an 11-4 victory before closing out the matchup with Saturday's 8-6 win.
A Remarkable 2026 Season
This year's Tomball squad has assembled one of the most impressive seasons in Texas high school baseball.
The Cougars advanced through a challenging playoff path that included victories over Langham Creek, Oak Ridge, Rowlett and Tyler Legacy before reaching the state semifinals. After dropping their first game of the season against Marcus, Tomball rebounded to win the next two contests and now enters the state championship game with a 42-1-1 record.
Throughout the season, the Cougars have demonstrated a combination of dominant pitching, timely hitting and veteran leadership. The roster has featured standout performances from several key players, including Texas A&M commit C.J. Sampson, who has been one of the state's premier two-way players, contributing both on the mound and at the plate.
The team's consistency throughout the year has kept Tomball ranked among the top high school baseball programs in Texas and earned the Cougars another opportunity to compete for a state title.
Why Dell Diamond Matters
The Cougars' return to Dell Diamond carries special significance for players and fans alike.
Located in Round Rock, just north of Austin, Dell Diamond is home to the Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. The professional-caliber stadium has long served as the host venue for the UIL State Baseball Championships and represents one of the most recognizable destinations in Texas high school baseball.
Each June, teams from across the state arrive at Dell Diamond chasing championships, creating memorable experiences for student-athletes, families and communities. For many players, competing on the same field used by professional prospects is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.
For Tomball, returning to Dell Diamond for a third consecutive season reflects the standard of excellence the program has established and the expectations that now accompany Cougar baseball.
Championship Showdown Awaits
Tomball will face Memorial High School of Spring Branch ISD in the UIL Class 6A Division II State Championship Game at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
The matchup presents another opportunity for the Cougars to add to an already impressive legacy while bringing another state championship trophy back to Tomball ISD.
For the community, the significance extends beyond wins and losses. The team's sustained success has united students, parents, teachers, alumni and local businesses around a program that continues to elevate Tomball's profile on the statewide stage.
As the Cougars prepare to take the field once again at Dell Diamond, the excitement throughout Tomball is understandable. Three consecutive state championship game appearances are a rare accomplishment in Texas high school baseball, and this year's team has secured its place among the most accomplished groups in school history.
Residents across Tomball and northwest Harris County will have another chance to cheer on the Cougars as they pursue the next chapter in what has already been a memorable season.
