Northwest Assistance Ministries Invites Community to Give Back Through Summer Food Drive, July 4th Card Project and Volunteer Opportunities
As summer settles into Northwest Houston, Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) is inviting residents to make a meaningful difference close to home through a series of community-focused initiatives designed to support local families, seniors and individuals facing hardship.
From helping stock pantry shelves with breakfast essentials to creating handmade July 4th cards and volunteering throughout the year, NAM is providing simple but impactful ways for neighbors to come together and strengthen the community. The nonprofit organization, which has served the region since 1983, continues to demonstrate how small acts of generosity can create lasting local impact.
Summer Cereal Drive Helps Fill Breakfast Tables Across Northwest Houston
One of NAM's current community efforts is its Summer Cereal Drive, benefiting the Joanne Watford Nutrition Center at 15555 Kuykendahl Road in Houston.
The drive encourages residents to donate boxes of cereal to help ensure local families have access to one of the most important meals of the day. Summer can be an especially challenging time for families when school meal programs are unavailable, making community food donations even more important.
Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Joanne Watford Nutrition Center. Every box donated helps support NAM's mission of addressing food insecurity and providing stability for neighbors throughout the Northwest Houston area.
Handmade July 4th Cards Bring Holiday Cheer
NAM is also encouraging community members to celebrate Independence Day through creativity and kindness with its July 4th Card Making Activity.
Participants are invited to create red, white and blue handmade cards featuring messages of appreciation, encouragement and patriotism. The project welcomes families, church groups, businesses, students and community organizations looking for a meaningful service opportunity.
Students can also earn volunteer service hours through the initiative, with 25 completed cards equaling five service hours.
Using simple materials such as construction paper, cardstock, markers and stickers, participants can help spread holiday cheer while creating personal connections with fellow community members. Completed cards are requested by June 26 and can be dropped off at NAM's campus on Kuykendahl Road.
Creativity and Sustainability Meet at NAM Resale
One of the many ways Northwest Assistance Ministries funds its programs is through NAM Resale, where donated items are given a second life while helping support neighbors in need. Recently, the organization shared the story of a customer who transformed a wicker basket purchased from the store into a unique pendant light fixture for her home—a creative example of the unexpected treasures shoppers can find on the resale floor.
Located at 15702 Bammel Village Dr, Houston, TX 77014, NAM Resale offers residents an opportunity to shop for furniture, home décor, clothing, household goods, collectibles and other unique finds while helping fund vital services provided by Northwest Assistance Ministries. Beginning June 1, 2026, the store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The store also accepts donations of gently used items from the community. Donations are tax deductible, and residents can contact NAM Resale to schedule a donation pickup or obtain additional information. Every purchase and donation helps generate funding for the programs and initiatives that NAM provides to individuals and families across Northwest Houston.
For shoppers, the resale store offers the excitement of discovering one-of-a-kind treasures. For the community, it serves as another way neighbors can support neighbors, helping sustain services that address food insecurity, financial hardship, health needs and other challenges facing local families.
Volunteers Remain the Heart of NAM's Mission
Behind every food distribution, community program and client service is a network of dedicated volunteers.
NAM reports that nearly 3,000 individuals volunteer with the organization each year, contributing their time and talents across a variety of programs. Volunteers assist in numerous areas and play a critical role in helping the nonprofit meet growing community needs.
Individuals interested in volunteering can complete an application through NAM. Applicants under the age of 16 must submit a parental or guardian permission form, and all volunteer applications are subject to a background check.
For many residents, volunteering offers an opportunity not only to help others but also to build meaningful connections within the community.
Building a Stronger Community Through Neighbors Helping Neighbors
At the center of each initiative is NAM's longstanding mission to create a healthy, connected community where all neighbors have the opportunity to achieve stability, wellness and purpose.
As a nonprofit social service organization serving Northwest Houston and surrounding areas, Northwest Assistance Ministries provides assistance related to food, shelter, health and financial stability. Through community partnerships, volunteer engagement and donor support, the organization continues to help individuals and families navigate difficult circumstances while working toward long-term success.
Whether it's donating a box of cereal, creating a handmade holiday card, shopping at NAM Resale or volunteering a few hours of time, residents have multiple opportunities this summer to make a direct impact in the lives of their neighbors.
What Happens Next
Residents interested in participating can donate cereal at the Joanne Watford Nutrition Center, complete July 4th cards before the June 26 deadline, explore volunteer opportunities, or visit NAM Resale to support the organization's programs through purchases and donations.
As Northwest Assistance Ministries continues its work across the region, these community-driven efforts serve as a reminder that local support remains one of the strongest resources available to families in need.
