Tobin Center in San Antonio Unveils 2026–2027 Frost Fine Arts Series Featuring Syncopated Ladies, Alvin Ailey, Legally Blonde and The Who’s Tommy
San Antonio’s next performing arts season will bring together tap dancing with a modern edge, the traditions of Mexican folklore, one of America’s most influential dance companies and two theatrical productions built around unforgettable music and stories.
The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts has introduced its 2026–2027 Frost Fine Arts Series, offering local audiences a lineup that stretches across cultures, generations and performance styles. The season includes Syncopated Ladies on Sept. 17, 2026; Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández on March 21, 2027; Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater on April 14, 2027; Legally Blonde — The Musical on April 15, 2027; and a new production of The Who’s Tommy on June 6, 2027.
For San Antonio residents, the series creates an opportunity to experience nationally and internationally recognized productions without leaving the city. It also continues the Tobin Center’s role as a gathering place where families, longtime arts supporters and first-time theatergoers can share live performances in the center of downtown.
Syncopated Ladies Bring Tap Dance Into a New Era on Sept. 17, 2026
The Los Angeles-based Syncopated Ladies will bring their high-energy blend of rhythm, movement and contemporary music to the Frost Fine Arts Series on Sept. 17, 2026.
The all-female tap dance band was created by Emmy Award-nominated dancer and choreographer Chloe Arnold, a protégée of dancer, actress and choreographer Debbie Allen. The group has earned a broad international following, with its online videos generating more than 200 million views.
Syncopated Ladies has worked with Beyoncé and appeared on Good Morning America, at the U.S. Open and on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance, where the dancers won the program’s first dance crew battle. The group has also performed its full-length concert, Syncopated Ladies: Live!, for sold-out audiences.
Their appearance in San Antonio will offer audiences a look at how tap dance continues to evolve while remaining rooted in musicality, precision and the shared energy of live performance.
Ballet Folklórico de México Celebrates Generations of Tradition on March 21, 2027
The season will also welcome Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández, one of Mexico’s best-known cultural dance companies, on March 21, 2027.
Founded in 1952 by dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández, the company brings together the music, costumes and dances of Mexican folklore, with works inspired by periods ranging from pre-Columbian civilizations to the modern era.
Ballet Folklórico de México is permanently based at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. Its repertory includes more than 120 choreographed ballets, performed by a company of approximately 60 dancers and musicians who tour throughout Mexico and internationally.
For many San Antonio families, the production may carry a personal connection to traditions passed down through generations. For others, it offers an opportunity to experience the regional stories, music and movement that have helped shape Mexico’s cultural identity.
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Returns With Resilience and Joy on April 14, 2027
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will bring both contemporary choreography and celebrated works from the company’s repertory to the Tobin Center stage on April 14, 2027.
Known for expanding the possibilities of modern dance, the company continues to commission and perform new works while preserving pieces that have inspired audiences for decades. Its San Antonio engagement will include Revelations, Alvin Ailey’s landmark work centered on perseverance, spirituality, grief and joy.
The production’s combination of athletic movement and emotional storytelling has made the company an enduring presence in American performing arts. Its appearance in the Frost Fine Arts Series gives local audiences a chance to see a repertory that continues to influence dancers and choreographers around the world.
Legally Blonde Brings Humor, Heart and Girl Power to San Antonio on April 15, 2027
Broadway fans will find a familiar story in Legally Blonde — The Musical on April 15, 2027, an international award-winning adaptation that follows Elle Woods as she challenges expectations and pursues a future on her own terms.
The musical follows Elle as she confronts stereotypes, sexism, social status and scandal while working toward her goals. Along the way, she demonstrates that confidence, intelligence and personal style do not have to be mutually exclusive.
With memorable songs, large-scale dance numbers and a story centered on self-discovery, the production blends comedy with themes that remain relevant to modern audiences. Its message — that people do not have to change who they are to prove what they are capable of — has helped make the musical a favorite among theatergoers.
The Who’s Tommy Reimagines a Rock Opera Classic on June 6, 2027
On June 6, 2027, the Frost Fine Arts Series will also feature a new production of The Who’s Tommy, the rock opera that first reshaped musical theater and popular music in 1969.
Created by The Who guitarist and composer Pete Townshend, the story follows Tommy Walker, a young boy who withdraws from the world after witnessing a traumatic act. His extraordinary talent for pinball eventually propels him from isolation into fame and a complicated role as a cultural figure.
The production features songs including “I’m Free,” “See Me, Feel Me,” “Sensation” and “Pinball Wizard.” Townshend and Tony Award-winning original director Des McAnuff have revisited the story for a new generation, exploring its themes of celebrity, identity, trauma and the search for connection.
For longtime fans, the production offers a renewed look at a groundbreaking work. For younger audiences, it may serve as an introduction to a musical that helped expand the boundaries of what a Broadway production could sound and feel like.
A San Antonio Performing Arts Landmark
Located along the San Antonio River, the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2014 following the transformation of the historic Municipal Auditorium. The building’s original façade was preserved as part of a redevelopment that created a modern performing arts destination while maintaining a visible link to the city’s past.
The facility includes three primary venues. The H-E-B Performance Hall can accommodate 1,738 reserved seats or up to 2,100 guests in a general admission configuration. Its main floor can be converted from traditional theater seating to a flat-floor arrangement for banquets, concerts and other events, while the hall’s acoustics can be adjusted for different types of performances.
The Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater is a flexible black box space that can seat approximately 259 to 300 guests, depending on its configuration. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza provides an outdoor setting for concerts, movie nights, festivals, fitness programs and community gatherings.
Development of the Tobin Center was supported through public and private investment. Bexar County voters approved $100 million in construction bonds in 2008, while the City of San Antonio contributed the Municipal Auditorium and neighboring former fire department headquarters. The Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation also raised private funding, including a $15 million challenge grant from the Tobin Endowment.
Since opening, the Tobin Center has hosted concerts, theatrical productions, dance performances, community events and educational experiences, helping make live performance more accessible to audiences across San Antonio and the surrounding region.
