Texas Governor Greg Abbott Announces Transitional Sheltering Assistance for 17 Counties Affected by Hurricane Beryl

July 25 2024

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced that 17 counties impacted by Hurricane Beryl will receive Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), according to a recent press release. The aid comes in the wake of severe power outages resulting from the hurricane, which have necessitated the purchase or rental of generators by many Texans.

In his announcement, Governor Abbott highlighted the value of the federal assistance, stating, "The approval of 17 Texas counties for FEMA's Transitional Sheltering Assistance will help ensure Texans have access to the support they need to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Beryl." Abbott emphasized that Texas will continue to coordinate efforts with federal, state, and local officials to meet the needs of affected Texans.

Approved counties for the TSA program include Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Walker, and Wharton. As damage assessments are completed, more counties may become eligible.

Under the TSA program, FEMA directly pays costs to participating hotels and motels, covering room rates, taxes, and some pet fees. Texans are responsible for all other expenses. Those who qualify will be notified by FEMA with more information about transitional sheltering options.

In an important development, FEMA has approved Texas’ request to waive an assistance requirement for Texans who purchased or rented generators between July 5-20 due to the power outages caused by Hurricane Beryl. Texans within the approved counties may be eligible to receive additional assistance from FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program for generators rented or purchased during this period.

The cost-share TSA program is a FEMA initiative, and continued eligibility is assessed by FEMA on an individual basis. Once eligibility concludes, participants will be notified by FEMA seven days before the scheduled checkout date.

Texans can apply for FEMA disaster assistance online at disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362.
