'Tales for Tails' Brings Joy to Shelter Pets and Young Readers at Fort Bend County Pets

December 27 2024

Yesterday at Fort Bend County Animal Services (FBCAS), the air was filled with the soft murmur of young voices reading aloud, the gentle swish of wagging tails, and the attentive gazes of shelter pets soaking in the love. During the heartwarming “Tales for Tails” program, children eagerly gathered with books in hand for some quality one-on-one time reading to shelter pets. The event brought smiles all around—offering joy and comfort to the animals while giving kids a chance to hone their reading skills in a unique and meaningful way. For families, it was a chance to give back to the community during the holiday season—and for the animals, it was a reminder they’re not forgotten.

Launched in 2016 as a summer reading initiative, “Tales for Tails” quickly became a favorite at FBCAS, located at 1210 Blume Road in Rosenberg. The program, designed for kids aged 7-15, offers a simple but powerful way to connect children with shelter animals. Each 25-minute session allows kids to practice reading in a safe and nonjudgmental setting, while shelter pets enjoy soothing voices and companionship. The result? Calmer, happier pets and more confident, compassionate readers.

Yesterday’s event saw children and families come together to brighten the holidays for animals who are eagerly and patiently waiting for their forever homes. “It’s amazing how something as simple as reading a story can make such a difference,” said an FBCAS representative. “You can see the pets relax and connect with the kids. It’s like the whole room fills with warmth and compassion.”

The program doesn’t stop at the shelter. FBCAS also brings the magic of “Tales for Tails” to classrooms, giving students the chance to interact with pets while enhancing their literacy skills. Families interested in attending can secure a spot via this form. Schools and organizations can reach out to Community Involvement Coordinator Barbara Vass at barbara.vass@fortbendcountytx.gov for offsite opportunities.

For those who participated in yesterday's event, the memories created were unforgettable—a powerful reminder of the healing impact of stories, compassion, and the special connection between humans and animals. Through "Tales for Tails," FBCAS continues to foster kindness and create lasting memories for children and their shelter pets, one book at a time.
