Step Inside the Algorithm: Houston Museum of Natural Science Debuts 'Clickbait' Interactive Digital Exhibit This Memorial Day
For many Houston-area families, conversations about screen time, social media, and online safety happen at the dinner table—but starting Memorial Day weekend, those conversations may take on a whole new dimension.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) is introducing Clickbait: a digital obsession, a first-of-its-kind interactive exhibition designed to bring the digital world into physical space. Opening May 23 (with early access for members on May 22), the exhibit invites visitors to step inside the very algorithms, platforms, and systems that quietly shape daily life online.
For parents, students, and anyone navigating today’s digital landscape, the experience offers something increasingly valuable: a chance to slow down and actually see how the internet works—and how it works on us.
Turning Screens Into Something You Can Walk Through
Described as “an app you can walk through,” Clickbait: a digital obsession transforms a traditional museum gallery into a fully immersive, walkable digital environment.
Through 18 large-scale interactive installations, guests explore topics that often feel abstract or invisible—social media algorithms, artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and digital identity—in a way that is hands-on and easy to understand. Instead of passively scrolling, visitors actively engage with the systems behind the screen.
“While we hope to draw visitors in with this novel approach—an exhibit that experiences you as you experience it – our goal is for our guests to leave with a better understanding of social media literacy and how the choices you make with your devices inform the world around you,” said Nicole Temple, Vice President of Education at HMNS. “This is the perfect opportunity for families to open the door for deeper conversations about entertainment and safety in the digital landscape.”

A Journey Through the Digital World: Me, We, and The World
The exhibit is structured as a three-part journey that mirrors how people experience life online—individually, socially, and globally.
In the “ME” zone, visitors begin by exploring their own digital footprint. From user agreements to personal preferences, the space highlights how everyday choices shape what appears on a screen.
The experience then expands into the “WE” zone, where the focus shifts to connection—how online communities form, how data links people together, and how strangers become part of shared digital spaces.
Finally, “THE WORLD” zone challenges visitors to think bigger, examining how algorithms influence news, perception, and even reality itself through tools like AI-generated deepfakes.
Interactive Highlights Designed for All Ages
Designed for ages 8 and up, the exhibit blends education with play, making complex technology approachable for families.
Visitors begin their journey at “The First Click,” where they create a temporary digital profile that follows them through the exhibit—mirroring how real-world platforms track user behavior. Along the way, experiences like “Talk to Me” simulate the pull of social validation, while “Guess Me” explores anonymity through masked digital interactions.
A physical maze brings digital mapping to life, and at the end, guests receive a personalized “digital summary,” offering a transparent look at the data trail they created during their visit.

Why This Matters for Houston Area Families
In a region as diverse and fast-growing as the Greater Houston area, access to meaningful, educational experiences continues to be a priority for families—and Clickbait arrives at a time when digital literacy is more important than ever.
Rather than telling visitors what to think about technology, the exhibition creates space for reflection. It encourages families to ask questions, compare experiences, and better understand how online systems influence everything from entertainment to information.
That mission aligns closely with the broader role of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, one of the most visited museums in the country and a cornerstone of the Houston Museum District. With five floors of permanent exhibit halls, the Wortham Giant Screen Theatre, Cockrell Butterfly Center, Burke Baker Planetarium, and the George Observatory, HMNS has long focused on making complex ideas accessible and engaging for all ages.
Located at 5555 Hermann Park Drive, the museum continues to evolve with exhibitions like Clickbait, blending science, technology, and real-world relevance in ways that resonate with today’s audiences.
What Happens Next
Clickbait: a digital obsession opens to the public on May 23, with member preview access on May 22. Tickets and additional details are available at hmns.org or by calling 713-639-4629.
As digital life continues to shape how people connect, learn, and understand the world, this exhibit offers Houston residents a rare opportunity to step back—and step inside—the systems guiding it all.
