Spring ISD Launches Historic Mariachi Program, Celebrating Culture and Student Talent

February 11 2025

Spring Independent School District has made history with the creation of Mariachi León, the district’s first-ever mariachi ensemble. This groundbreaking program reflects the district’s commitment to cultural representation, student achievement, and musical excellence, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with a rich musical tradition while building confidence and teamwork.

The mariachi program is led by JD Guzman, a two-time Grammy Award-winning Signature School Educator, who has been with Spring ISD for 17 years. Guzman, who has also served as the Director of Percussion and Jazz at Spring High School for eight years, brings an extensive background in music education and performance. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping the new program, ensuring that students not only master technical skills but also develop a deep appreciation for the heritage and significance of mariachi music.

A Transformational Experience for Students

The launch of Mariachi León has already had a profound impact on students. Guzman recalled a moment that underscored the significance of the program:

"One student’s reaction to putting on the uniform for the first time left a lasting impact. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, 'Sir, I’ve never felt so proud wearing a uniform.' I didn’t realize how much this would mean to them until that moment," said Guzman.

The emotional resonance of the ensemble extends beyond students to parents, administrators, and the broader community. When Mariachi León performed at a Spring ISD school board meeting, the response was overwhelming.

"I saw parents with tears in their eyes. And Dr. Hinojosa’s reaction was unforgettable. In my 20 years of teaching, I’ve never seen a response like that in fine arts. That moment will stay with me forever," Guzman shared.

Leadership Support and Cultural Representation

For Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa, the introduction of the mariachi program represents a significant milestone in the district’s efforts to honor diversity, student voice, and cultural identity.

"Mariachi León is more than just a music program; it is a celebration of culture, language, tradition, and student achievement," said Hinojosa. "Through this program, our students not only develop musical skills but also a deep sense of understanding and pride in the Hispanic heritage and community."

Hinojosa has been a strong advocate for initiatives that uplift diverse backgrounds and traditions within the school district. Her leadership ensures that students see themselves reflected in the programs and opportunities available to them.

"Our district is committed to providing enriching choices and opportunities for all students, and Mariachi León is a shining example of that commitment. This program fosters talent, discipline, and cultural appreciation, all while building confidence and school spirit," she added.

A Vision for the Future

With a strong foundation established, the vision for Mariachi León is to expand and grow, potentially adding dedicated classes, additional instructors, and multiple performance ensembles that could travel and represent the district at events nationwide.

"I tell them, if you play an instrument or sing, come visit. Let’s see what you have to offer," said Guzman, encouraging student participation.

The mariachi program is already making a lasting impact, not only by offering students a chance to develop their musical abilities but also by instilling pride, discipline, and a deeper connection to their cultural heritage. Thanks to the dedication of educators, the support of district leadership, and the passion of students, Mariachi León is poised to become a cherished and enduring part of Spring ISD’s legacy.
