Ride Easier: METRO Launches New Fare System and Expanded Safety Across Greater Houston Transit
For Houston-area commuters, getting around town just got a lot simpler. The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) has officially launched the RideMETRO fare system, a modern, more convenient way to pay, ride, and manage your trips—whether you're headed to downtown Houston or just planning your daily commute from Cypress, Katy, Spring, Tomball, or other suburban communities.
The system, which went live on January 5, supports METRONow, the agency’s forward-looking initiative to improve the rider experience, enhance safety, and provide long-term mobility solutions across the region.
“We want riding METRO to feel easy and intuitive for everyone, whether you ride with us every day or you’re stepping on board for the first time,” said METRO Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock. “By expanding payment options and simplifying fares, we’re removing unnecessary barriers and making it faster and more convenient for people to move confidently across our region.”
Simplified Payments for a Smoother Ride
The new RideMETRO platform offers riders more flexibility than ever before. Payment options now include:
- RideMETRO Fare Card (physical or virtual)
- Credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover)
- Mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay)
- Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) paper tickets
- Cash (accepted on buses and at TVMs)
Through the RideMETRO App or the new online portal, riders can now easily add funds, track trips, lock lost or stolen cards, manage multiple cards, and even track reward progress.
And there's a perk: Every 10 paid trips using the RideMETRO Card earns a free ride, giving frequent riders more value with less hassle.

Why It Matters for Suburban Commuters
For those living in Cypress, Katy, Spring, Tomball, and surrounding areas, the new system is especially timely. Many residents rely on METRO’s Park & Ride express buses to commute into downtown Houston or the Texas Medical Center. These services, designed for comfort and efficiency, use HOV express lanes to bypass traffic and minimize travel time.
Each Park & Ride lot offers free parking and accessible boarding, and many facilities are Wi-Fi equipped for riders looking to stay connected en route.
Popular Park & Ride locations serving Greater Houston suburbs include:
- Cypress Park & Ride – 25210 U.S. Hwy. 290 Frontage Rd.
- Addicks Park & Ride – 14230 Old Katy Rd.
- Grand Parkway Park & Ride – 1030 North Grand Pkwy., Katy
- Kingsland Park & Ride – 21669 Kingsland Blvd.
- Spring Park & Ride – 17444 Carlsway Rd.
- Northwest Station Park & Ride – 18502 Northwest Fwy.
With METRO’s 26+ Park & Ride lots and 24+ transit centers, many located outside the 610 Loop, suburban residents have seamless options for connecting to METRO’s larger system.
One App for All Your Transit Needs
The updated RideMETRO App consolidates several tools into one convenient interface, allowing riders to:
- Plan trips
- Track buses in real time
- Receive service alerts
- Manage fare accounts
This all-in-one mobile solution replaces the older METRO Q® Fare Card and Q Mobile Ticketing App, which will officially sunset on April 5, 2026. Until then, riders can continue to use their existing cards and tickets.
RideMETRO Fare Cards are available for $2 at RideStore locations, vending machines, online, and participating retailers.

Safety Comes First with METRONow
Alongside the tech upgrades, METRO is doubling down on transit safety with a newly expanded law enforcement partnership. Led by METRO Police Chief Ban Tien, the initiative brings increased officer visibility systemwide.
“Our number one priority is the safety of our riders, operators, and employees,” said Chief Tien. “Through METRONow and with the support of our regional partners, we are increasing visibility, strengthening response capabilities, and reinforcing confidence in METRO as a welcoming and reliable transportation option.”
The safety expansion includes enhanced patrols on all rail lines, buses, and in high-traffic transit centers. METRO is actively collaborating with the Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and multiple Constable Precincts to maintain a secure and supportive environment.
Riders can expect to see more uniformed officers and coordinated patrols aimed at deterring crime and building public confidence in the system.
