As another school year comes to a close, families across northeast and northwest Harris County are beginning the annual search for meaningful summer activities that keep children engaged, active and learning close to home. This year, Harris County Precinct 3 is once again stepping in with a wide lineup of affordable and free summer kids programs at community centers, parks and nature facilities throughout the region.

From Crosby and Huffman to Spring, Humble, Cypress and Highlands, the 2026 Harris County Precinct 3 Summer Kids Programs are designed to give children opportunities to explore science, art, nature, recreation and hands-on learning while helping families stay connected to community resources throughout the summer months.

Many of the programs are free to attend, while others offer low-cost registration for specialized camps and educational experiences. Activities range from STEM workshops and water festivals to archery, wildlife exploration and nature camps. Several programs also include teen volunteer opportunities and leadership experiences for older students.

Summer Programs Designed for Families Across Harris County Precinct 3

Harris County Precinct 3 officials say the summer initiative reflects an ongoing effort to provide safe, educational and community-centered activities for children during the school break.

Programs will take place at multiple Precinct 3 community centers and parks, including the Crosby Community Center, George H.W. Bush Community Center, Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center, Judge Ted Poe Community Center, Juergen’s Hall Community Center, May Community Center, Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, San Jacinto Community Center and Trini Mendenhall Community Center.

The county’s Community Outreach division is also bringing back its popular Roving Rangers Summer Camp, which encourages children to explore the outdoors through nature and recreation-focused activities. The camp runs June 2 through July 2 and includes programs at Russ Poppe Park, Burroughs Park, Atascocita Park, Goforth Park and Crosby Park.

According to the camp flyer, children ages 7 to 9 can participate in “Nature & Water Exploration,” while ages 10 to 15 can join “Recreation Adventure” activities. The drop-off camp operates Tuesday through Thursday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and registration closes May 26.

Nature, Science and Outdoor Learning Take Center Stage

Several of this summer’s offerings place a strong emphasis on environmental education and hands-on science experiences.

At Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center in Humble, children can participate in the “Backyard Biologist” Summer Nature Camp, where campers will create nature journals while learning about birds, mammals, reptiles, insects and plants.

The camp includes multiple sessions for children ages 5 to 12 throughout June, along with programs for older youth in July.

Teens will also have opportunities to gain leadership experience through volunteer and counselor programs at Jesse H. Jones Park. The park’s Teen Opportunities initiative offers positions for Nature Camp Helpers ages 13 to 15 and Environmental Education Volunteer Counselors ages 16 and older.

The Environmental Education Counselor program includes conservation-focused “Trail Team” days, giving teens direct exposure to environmental stewardship and park operations.

Meanwhile, Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens in Humble is partnering with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension 4-H to host a Junior Master Gardener Camp for children ages 8 to 11.

The three-day camp teaches participants about plant growth, insects, soil, nutrition, gardening and life skills while allowing children to become certified Junior Master Gardeners. Sessions are scheduled for June 29 through July 1 and July 13 through July 15.

Community Centers Offering Free Weekly Summer Activities

Many Harris County Precinct 3 community centers are also offering weekly themed events designed to provide free or low-cost entertainment for families during the summer break.

At the Crosby Community Center, weekly Wednesday programs begin June 3 and continue through June 24 with activities including “I-Fly,” “Fun Day” and a “Celebration of America” puppet and story time event.

The San Jacinto Community Center in Highlands will host Thursday afternoon activities beginning May 28, including a literacy event with Houston Astros mascot Orbit, “Pizza with a Cop” alongside Precinct 3 constables, Mad Science programming, a magic show and a Creature Teacher presentation.

In Huffman, the May Community Center will host Tuesday summer programs throughout June featuring indoor archery, wildlife education, water activities and dance programming for children of various ages.

At Juergen’s Hall Community Center in Cypress, families can attend a Water Day Festival with slides, games and hot dogs on June 11, followed by a “Wild Bird Adventures” educational event on June 17.

The George H.W. Bush Community Center in Spring is also hosting a three-day Summer Fun Adventure Camp featuring a superhero movie night, Mad Science Workshop and Splash Bash water day.

Arts, STEM and Interactive Learning at Trini Mendenhall Community Center

One of the most extensive summer schedules this year is taking place at the Trini Mendenhall Community Center in Houston, where families will find nearly two months of rotating activities focused on creativity, science and interactive learning.

Programming includes canvas art workshops, science experiments, Pokémon card game instruction, painting classes, superhero bingo, carnival events, virtual reality experiences, fruit bouquet workshops, butterfly pinning, birdhouse building and beginner archery lessons.

The center is also partnering with the Harris County Public Library and Curiosity Cruiser STEM Program to provide weekly STEM programming and book giveaways for children ages 0 to 18.

Several activities require registration, and organizers encourage parents to sign children up early due to limited space.

More Than Summer Entertainment

For many families, these summer programs offer more than just a way to fill time between school years.

The programs help provide structured environments where children can stay physically active, continue learning and build friendships within their own communities. They also give parents access to affordable local programming without the need for long commutes or expensive summer travel plans.

Programs centered around conservation, gardening, STEM and wildlife education also reflect a broader investment in outdoor learning and environmental awareness for the next generation.

As neighborhoods throughout Harris County continue to grow, local leaders say community programming like this helps strengthen connections between families, parks, libraries and public spaces that serve residents year-round.

Families interested in registration information or program details can contact individual community centers directly or visit Harris County Precinct 3 online for additional schedules and updates.
