Rabies Case in New Braunfels Prompts Safety Reminder for Morningside Trails Residents

Rabies Case in New Braunfels Prompts Safety Reminder for Morningside Trails Residents

Morningside Trails  /   Katy / Fulshear
August 18 2026

For families in Morningside Trails, a recently confirmed rabies case in New Braunfels is a timely reminder that an unfamiliar cat, bat or other wild animal should never be approached simply because it appears injured, unusually friendly or out of place.

The City of New Braunfels announced Aug. 17 that a cat collected by Animal Welfare staff in the 800 block of West Mill Street tested positive for rabies after residents reported aggressive and unusual behavior. Rabies is a deadly viral disease affecting the nervous system of mammals, including people, and is most commonly spread through the saliva of an infected animal, often through a bite.

While the confirmed case was identified in New Braunfels, the practical advice applies well beyond the immediate area. For Morningside Trails households with children, outdoor pets or yards that may attract wildlife, knowing what to watch for can help prevent a dangerous encounter before it happens.

New Braunfels Temporarily Suspends TNR Near Rabies Case

Following the positive test, the City of New Braunfels implemented a four-week suspension of its Trap, Neuter, Release program for feral cats within a one-mile radius of where the infected cat was found.

If no additional positive rabies cases are identified in that area during the four-week period, the TNR program is expected to resume there.

The temporary change is one part of the city’s response as health and animal-welfare officials encourage residents to be especially cautious around stray cats as well as foxes, raccoons, bats, skunks and unfamiliar dogs.

How Residents Can Help Prevent Rabies Exposure

For residents wondering how to prevent rabies exposure in New Braunfels and surrounding communities, city health officials recommend several straightforward precautions.

Do not approach or hand-feed wild animals, even if they appear calm. Pets should remain current on their rabies vaccinations, while garbage, pet food and other possible food sources should be kept in secure containers so they do not attract wildlife.

The City of New Braunfels also advises residents not to touch sick or injured animals. If a bat gets inside a home, residents should avoid direct contact, contain the situation carefully if possible and contact the appropriate authorities.

Anyone bitten or scratched by an unfamiliar animal should clean the wound and seek medical attention promptly.

These precautions can be particularly important for Morningside Trails parents whose children spend time outdoors. Young children may be naturally inclined to approach a stray cat or an animal that appears hurt, making a family conversation about keeping a safe distance worthwhile.

What Does a Rabid Animal Look Like?

Rabies does not always produce the same symptoms, but New Braunfels officials are asking residents to watch for several behaviors that could indicate an animal is seriously ill.

Warning signs may include:

  • Partial paralysis or difficulty walking normally
  • Circling or staggering as though disoriented
  • Unexplained aggressive behavior
  • Acting unusually tame or showing little fear of people

An animal displaying one of these behaviors should not be approached, captured or handled.

Residents within New Braunfels who see an animal behaving suspiciously can contact New Braunfels Animal Welfare at 830-608-2183. The city’s Animal Welfare and Rescue Division handles animal concerns, investigates animal bites and cruelty complaints, assists with stray and lost animals, and promotes rabies vaccination and responsible pet ownership.

Pet Vaccinations Remain an Important Line of Defense

Keeping dogs and cats vaccinated is one of the simplest steps pet owners can take to reduce rabies risk.

Within New Braunfels city limits, dogs and cats older than four months are required to be registered after receiving a rabies vaccine. The city notes that pet registration also helps reunite lost animals with their owners and provides documentation of rabies vaccination.

Residents who are unsure whether a pet's vaccination is current can check their veterinary records or contact their veterinarian.

Why This Rabies Reminder Matters Locally

Rabies cases are uncommon enough that it can be easy to think of the disease as a distant concern. But the latest case involved a cat found in an ordinary New Braunfels neighborhood — the kind of animal someone might otherwise assume was simply lost, frightened or hungry.

That is why health officials are emphasizing caution rather than alarm.

Residents do not need to fear every stray cat or wild animal they see. The safer approach is simply to give unfamiliar animals space, keep pets vaccinated, avoid leaving food outdoors and report animals showing clearly abnormal behavior.

Those small precautions can help protect pets, children and neighbors while allowing trained animal-welfare professionals to handle potentially dangerous situations.
