Proud Pie in Katy Closes Their Doors After Nearly One Decade in Business
A beloved dessert spot in Katy that was known not just for its sumptuous and unique pies, but also for its heartfelt community engagement, Proud Pie, has announced it is permanently closing its doors due to financial challenges.
The renowned pie shop, known for its homemade artisan pies, gourmet coffee, and eclectic community-focused activities, opened its doors nine years ago. From fostering a unique blend of comfort food with a relaxed and welcoming ambiance to hosting events like Pie Bingo and imaginative initiatives such as its recent Coffee Pie Love Show, a lively mix of dating, community, and food-centric programming, Proud Pie has become a treasured hangout for both local residents and dessert aficionados alike.
In an emotional post on social media, the owners of Proud Pie revealed that they are unable to sustain operations due to the rising cost of ingredients and a sharp decrease in sales. The post highlighted their struggles with outstanding bills, including back rent and delayed sales tax payments, and announced their decision to shut down the business.
"This past Sunday was our last day of service. We just can't keep up with bills with this slow Summer," the post reads. "We are behind in both rent and our Sales Tax payments are behind, and the Texas Comptroller doesn't play. It's time to make the final decision to close."
The announcement follows a similar setback in mid-April this year, when the business was locked out due to unpaid rents. A community-driven initiative, coined Operation Angel Fund, saw 120 'pie angels' offering microloans to help Proud Pie reopen for that time.
Beyond its memorable pies - including State Fair Caramel Apple Pie, Ghirardelli Chocolate Silk Pie, and a unique creation called Big Boss (a mix of peanut butter silk, Oreo crust, whipped cream, Reese's peanut butter cups, and chocolate-covered pretzels) - Proud Pie was recognized for its philanthropy. Regularly giving back to the Katy community, they supported local sports teams and organized large-scale initiatives like their annual Pie Run.
As the pie shop prepares for its ultimate closure, the owners are seeking employment opportunities for their 18 staff members. Moreover, they organized one last pie sale at their store located at 3522 S Mason Rd, Katy, TX 77450 on Monday, July 1 at 6:30 PM in an attempt to fund their final payroll, demonstrating their commitment to their employees and customers right to the end.
"Proud Pie [was] the happiest, most loved pie shop in all of Texas. It was TRULY an honor to bake for and serve all of you!" they wrote.
