Nearly 2,000 Katy ISD Students Earn College Board National Recognition Honors
For nearly 2,000 Katy ISD students, years of studying, challenging coursework and strong test performance have added up to a national academic honor worth putting on a college application.
Katy ISD announced Oct. 6 that 1,926 students earned honors through the College Board National Recognition Program, with students represented from all 10 of the district's comprehensive high schools. Nationwide, more than 300,000 students received recognition this year, according to the district.
The number also represents an increase for Katy ISD. The district reported 1,680 College Board National Recognition awards in the previous cycle, adding another measure of academic achievement for a school system serving families throughout Katy and the surrounding area.
What the College Board recognition means for Katy ISD students
The National Recognition Program, offered through College Board's BigFuture, is designed to identify high-performing high school students and give them an academic credential they can include on college and scholarship applications.
For 2026, students could earn recognition through three categories: the School Recognition Award, First-Generation Recognition Award and Rural and Small-Town Recognition Award. Current sophomores and juniors were eligible based on academic performance and other program requirements.
“Our students have been recognized for their dedication and excellence, and we’re so proud of them,” Katy ISD Advanced Academics Director Danielle Sanchez said. “This honor reinforces their exceptional achievements in high school and will support them in their pursuit of a big future.”
To qualify, students must meet several benchmarks. College Board says eligible students must have a cumulative GPA of B+ or higher and demonstrate qualifying performance on the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 or AP Exams. Students can qualify by ranking among the top 10% of applicable test takers or by earning scores of 3 or higher on at least two distinct AP Exams taken by the end of 10th grade.
An honor that can travel beyond high school
The recognition is more than another certificate for students to bring home. College Board describes the National Recognition Program as a way for high-performing students to distinguish themselves on college and scholarship applications. Students who choose to participate in College Board's Student Search Service can also receive information from participating colleges, universities and scholarship organizations.
That gives the achievement a practical connection to what comes next. For Katy families navigating college applications, admissions and scholarships, national academic recognition can become another piece of a student's academic record as colleges begin looking at prospective applicants.
The latest honors also arrive during a busy stretch of college preparation across Katy ISD. The district's 2026 PSAT/NMSQT testing is taking place at high school campuses throughout October, meaning another group of Katy students is already working toward academic milestones that could help shape their options after graduation.
For the 1,926 students recognized this year, however, the moment belongs to them. Behind the districtwide number are individual students from campuses across Katy ISD who put in the work required to reach it, along with families, teachers and counselors who supported them along the way.
