New Braunfels Celebrates Grand Opening of Zipp Family Sports Park, a Landmark Investment in Youth Sports and Community Recreation

June 20 2026

A vision that began nearly 20 years ago officially became reality today as community members gathered to celebrate the grand opening of Zipp Family Sports Park, a nearly 130-acre multi-sport complex designed to serve athletes, families, and visitors from across the region.

Located at 1655 W. Klein Road in New Braunfels, the new facility represents one of the city's most significant investments in parks and recreation, creating a destination for youth sports tournaments, community events, and everyday outdoor activity. City leaders say the project reflects a long-term commitment to enhancing quality of life while supporting the needs of one of Texas' fastest-growing communities.

For local families, the park offers more than new playing fields. It provides a gathering place where children can develop skills, teammates can build friendships, and residents can come together around shared experiences that strengthen community connections.

A Community Vision Nearly Two Decades in the Making

The concept for a major sports complex in New Braunfels dates back to a 2006 Sports Complex Study, which identified the growing need for additional athletic facilities as the city's population continued to expand.

Over the years, that vision gained momentum through a combination of community support, public investment, and private partnership. Land for the project was secured through a 2013 voter-approved bond election, along with a generous 25-acre donation from the Zipp family, made possible with assistance from the New Braunfels Parks Foundation.

Additional funding followed through a 2019 voter-approved bond election, a grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and a $15 million commitment from the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation.

Together, those investments transformed a long-standing community goal into one of the largest recreational developments in the city's history.

Community Comes Together for Grand Opening Celebration

Residents, athletes, coaches, city leaders, and families gathered June 20 to celebrate the official opening of Zipp Family Sports Park and explore the new facility.

The celebration began with a 3K Run/Walk hosted by the New Braunfels Running Club, followed by live music, family-friendly games, activities, and opportunities for visitors to experience the park's amenities firsthand.

Young athletes participated in the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run competition, while local soccer talent took center stage during afternoon shootouts featuring players from New Braunfels High School and Long Creek High School.

Throughout the day, visitors toured the sprawling complex and got a firsthand look at a project years in the making.

"The opening of Zipp Family Sports Park represents a major investment in the quality of life for New Braunfels families and future generations," said City Manager Robert Camareno. "This park is more than just a place to play sports. It's an important gathering space for residents, promoting community and healthy living."

Designed for Athletes of All Ages

Situated near the intersection of Klein Road and FM 1044, Zipp Family Sports Park was designed as a regional sports destination capable of hosting both local league play and large-scale tournaments.

The current Phase 1 development includes:

  • Four soccer fields
  • Four baseball fields
  • Four softball fields
  • Concessions facilities
  • Restrooms
  • Shade structures
  • Bike parking
  • Extensive parking areas
  • Community gathering spaces and open lawns

At the heart of the complex is Heritage Plaza, a central gathering area that connects the various athletic venues and provides a place for families and spectators to relax between games.

The thoughtfully designed layout helps create an environment where sports, recreation, and community interaction come together in one location.

More Than a Sports Complex

As New Braunfels continues to grow, recreational amenities have become increasingly important to maintaining the community's quality of life.

Sports facilities like Zipp Family Sports Park not only provide opportunities for local athletes but also serve as economic drivers by attracting tournaments and visitors who support area restaurants, hotels, and businesses.

The project reflects a broader effort to ensure that community infrastructure keeps pace with population growth while preserving opportunities for outdoor recreation and family engagement.

For many residents, the new complex represents an investment in future generations and a place where lasting memories will be created for years to come.

What Happens Next

While Friday's grand opening marked a major milestone, city officials note that the current footprint represents only Phase 1 of the overall vision for Zipp Family Sports Park.

Additional athletic fields and amenities are planned as future phases move forward, allowing the park to continue growing alongside the community it serves.

In the coming months and years, the complex is expected to host local league play, youth sports tournaments, recreational programs, and community events that will bring families together and further establish New Braunfels as a regional destination for youth athletics.

Residents interested in learning more about the facility, upcoming events, and future development plans can visit the City of New Braunfels website and sign up for park notifications.

With the ribbon officially cut and families already enjoying the new facilities, Zipp Family Sports Park begins its next chapter as a place where competition, recreation, and community come together. For New Braunfels, the project stands as a testament to years of planning, partnership, and investment in the people who call the city home.
