New $24M Sam’s Club Planned for West San Antonio Along Loop 1604

San Antonio / New Braunfels  /  West Houston / Cypress
July 03 2026

A new $24 million Sam’s Club is planned for West San Antonio near Loop 1604, adding a 166,000-square-foot warehouse club to one of Bexar County’s most active growth corridors.

The planned Sam’s Club, listed as Sam’s Club 6277, is proposed for 3007 W Loop 1604 S #2 in San Antonio, TX 78245. Construction is currently listed to begin Nov. 30, 2026, with completion expected by Nov. 8, 2027. The scope of work identifies the project as new construction for a big-box retail facility.

For residents on San Antonio’s West Side and far West Side, the project represents more than another large storefront. A warehouse club of this size can change where nearby families shop for groceries, household goods, tires, prescriptions, electronics, seasonal items and everyday bulk purchases. It may also become a practical stop for small business owners, teachers, coaches, churches, neighborhood groups and local organizations that often rely on wholesale-style shopping for supplies.

A Major Retail Addition for West San Antonio

The planned location along West Loop 1604 places the project in one of San Antonio’s most closely watched retail and residential corridors. As new homes, schools, apartments, road improvements and shopping centers continue shaping the far West Side, major retailers are following the daily needs of a growing population.

At 166,000 square feet, the proposed Sam’s Club would be larger than many traditional grocery stores and positioned as a full warehouse club destination. The estimated $24 million construction cost also makes it a notable private retail investment for the area.

For nearby neighborhoods, that could mean more convenience for weekly grocery runs, bulk shopping, fuel or tire needs, pharmacy trips and last-minute household errands. For local traffic and surrounding businesses, it could also bring more daily activity to a corridor that is already becoming a key shopping destination for West San Antonio and Bexar County residents.

What Sam’s Club Sells and Why Its Model Is Different

Sam’s Club is a membership-based warehouse club owned by Walmart Inc. The brand opened its first club in 1983 in Midwest City, Oklahoma, and was named for Walmart founder Sam Walton. The company says the original idea was to help entrepreneurs and small businesses access products and services they needed, a model that has since expanded to serve families and everyday shoppers as well. Today, Sam’s Club operates nearly 600 locations in the United States and has announced plans for additional clubs as part of a broader national expansion. (Walmart News)

Unlike a traditional grocery store, Sam’s Club is built around a paid membership model and high-volume shopping. Members typically shop for groceries, meat, produce, bakery items, paper goods, cleaning supplies, furniture, electronics, clothing, seasonal merchandise, tires, optical services, pharmacy offerings, business supplies and home essentials.

The brand is also known for Member’s Mark, its private-label product line, along with services such as curbside pickup and Scan & Go, which allows members to scan items with a phone and pay through the app to skip traditional checkout lines. Sam’s Club currently promotes curbside pickup for groceries, electronics and household essentials, while its Scan & Go service is designed for in-club purchases, café orders and fuel. (Sam's Club)

That mix of bulk pricing, private-label products, digital convenience and member services is part of what makes warehouse clubs different from standard retail stores. For families watching grocery budgets and small business owners managing supply costs, the model can offer a one-stop option for both household and business needs.

Why This Matters for West Side Families and Small Businesses

West San Antonio has seen significant growth in recent years, and retail development often follows rooftops. As more families move into communities along and near Loop 1604, demand grows for grocery access, restaurants, medical services, fuel stations, entertainment, schools and everyday retail.

A new Sam’s Club would add another large-format shopping option for residents who may already travel across town or to other parts of San Antonio for warehouse club shopping. For parents, that could mean easier access to school lunch items, household staples, party supplies, diapers, snacks and seasonal purchases. For small businesses and local groups, it could mean a closer source for bulk food, office supplies, cleaning products and event materials.

The project may also carry broader meaning for homeowners and real estate watchers. Large retailers typically evaluate population growth, traffic patterns, income trends and nearby development before committing to new construction. While one store does not define a market by itself, a planned $24 million Sam’s Club along Loop 1604 is another signal that West San Antonio remains a strong focus for retail growth.

Part of Sam’s Club’s Larger Expansion Strategy

The planned San Antonio club also fits into a larger push by Sam’s Club to expand and modernize its national footprint. In 2023, Sam’s Club announced plans to open more than 30 new clubs across the United States over the next several years, along with investments in supply chain improvements and modernized shopping experiences. The company has been emphasizing larger, more technology-forward clubs that blend traditional warehouse shopping with digital tools. For shoppers, that means the modern Sam’s Club experience is no longer just about buying in bulk. It also includes mobile checkout, online ordering, curbside pickup, delivery options, member-only fuel savings and expanded services intended to make stock-up shopping more convenient.

For San Antonio residents, that national strategy could shape what the West Loop 1604 club eventually looks like when it opens, though Sam’s Club has not yet released detailed public information about the specific departments, fuel station plans, hiring numbers or opening events for this location.

What Happens Next

The construction timeline currently lists a start date of Nov. 30, 2026, and a completion date of Nov. 8, 2027. As with any major construction project, those dates may shift as permitting, site work, inspections and final preparations move forward.

An official grand opening date has not yet been announced. Until then, the planned Sam’s Club at 3007 W Loop 1604 S #2 gives West San Antonio residents another reason to watch the corridor closely as retail growth continues to follow the area’s expanding neighborhoods.

For families, homeowners, small business owners and longtime West Side residents, the project is one more sign of how quickly this part of San Antonio is changing — and how everyday shopping, traffic patterns and commercial development are evolving along with it.
