MD Anderson Breaks Ground on New Sugar Land Facility, Expanding Cancer Care in Fort Bend County
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has officially broken ground on its newest and largest Houston-area location to date. The 470,000-square-foot facility, located at 17547 Southwest Freeway in Sugar Land, will significantly expand cancer care services in Fort Bend County and surrounding communities when it opens in 2029.
The five-story facility will sit just in front of the Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land, replacing MD Anderson’s current leased space at 1327 Lake Pointe Parkway. Once completed, the site will offer comprehensive outpatient cancer care, including a new ambulatory surgery center, diagnostic imaging, radiation oncology, and expanded procedural services. The center also will house multidisciplinary clinics, designed to treat adult patients with a wide range of cancer diagnoses and low-to-medium acuity needs.

“As we advance our mission to end cancer, we have an unwavering commitment to provide high-quality, compassionate care and cutting-edge treatments to every patient who walks through our doors,” said Peter WT Pisters, M.D., president of MD Anderson. “By expanding our reach in Sugar Land, we can better meet the needs of patients in Southwest Houston, making it easier for them to access the treatment and support they deserve, right in their own community.”
The new MD Anderson Sugar Land cancer center joins a growing network of MD Anderson locations in the Greater Houston area, including existing sites in West Houston, League City, and The Woodlands, in addition to its flagship Texas Medical Center campus. Near Katy, the MD Anderson West Houston campus offers outpatient services that will now be complemented by the forthcoming expansion in nearby Sugar Land, making world-renowned cancer care even more accessible for Fort Bend County residents.

As Fort Bend County continues to experience rapid population growth—projected to increase by more than 30% by 2030—the Sugar Land site has been strategically planned to address current and future demand for cancer treatment near Houston.
“This facility comes at a pivotal moment as we strive to continue meeting the needs of our patients across Houston,” said Rosanna Morris, senior vice president and chief operating officer at MD Anderson. “This not only will help make our care more convenient for local patients, especially those undergoing frequent treatments like chemotherapy or radiation, but it also will help increase access to care outside of our Texas Medical Center Campus, potentially decreasing wait times for both local and regional patients.”
In addition to its clinical services, the facility reflects MD Anderson’s commitment to sustainability and patient-centered design. Plans include natural daylighting, minimized heat gain, and landscaped outdoor areas to promote wellness for both patients and staff.

“This new facility is a testament to our commitment to advancing exceptional patient care and to meeting the growing needs of our community,” said Kent Postma, vice president of clinical infrastructure development and growth at MD Anderson. “With its state-of-the-art design and focus on sustainability, this building will play a key role in enhancing the patient experience and supporting our mission to provide the highest quality care.”
The groundbreaking marks a milestone in MD Anderson’s long-term strategy to expand access to world-class cancer care in suburban Houston, ensuring patients in areas like Sugar Land, Katy, and beyond can receive advanced treatment closer to home.
