Drivers heading through downtown New Braunfels on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026 should expect temporary traffic impacts around Main Plaza while a tree contractor removes two red oak trees that city forestry staff have determined pose a high hazard.

Kriewaldt Tree Care is scheduled to perform the work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the removal expected to take one day. Temporary lane closures, equipment staging and minor delays are anticipated while crews work around the traffic circle.

Why the Two Red Oaks Are Being Removed

One of the trees is located along the outer traffic circle near South Seguin Avenue. The tree has an unbalanced full crown and root rot that increase the risk of whole-tree failure.

The second red oak is inside the traffic circle and is in advanced decline from a fungal infection that cannot be treated.

The city's Urban Forester and Arborist evaluated both trees and determined they present a high hazard.

What Drivers Should Expect Oct. 22

The work will require temporary lane closures and space for tree-removal equipment around Main Plaza. The city expects minor delays during the scheduled work period.

Residents, workers and visitors traveling through downtown during the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. work window should allow extra time and follow posted traffic control near the plaza.

Replacement Trees Are Planned

The two red oaks will be replaced with 100-gallon Monterrey oaks.

Replacing the trees allows the city to address the immediate safety concern while maintaining tree canopy around Main Plaza over time.

Residents can review the City of New Braunfels' official notice for current information about the Oct. 22 work.
