Loads of Fun Scheduled at Cinco Ranch Branch Library in February

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Boulevard in Katy, presents a variety of free children’s programs, adult computer classes, book clubs, and special programs for people of all ages each month. All programs are free and open to the public. SPECIAL EVENTS

West African Djembe-Drumming Performance 
Saturday, February 10 @ 11:00 am-12:00 noon (Meeting Room)
Enjoy the traditional tribal rhythms and spiritual gifts of West African djembe drumming in a special family-friendly performance by Gregg “Jebada” Powell, founder and director of the Joy of Djembe Drumming Ensemble. Powell will talk about the history of the instrument and the culture of the people who originally produced it. He will perform a variety of rhythms to demonstrate the influences of different countries and traditions. This event is made possible by the Friends of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library.
 

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

Because of elections, the library will have an abbreviated schedule of children’s programs in February. The library is unable to accommodate daycares and school groups at these activities. Craft packets will be given out at the end of each program, so that children may take them home to enjoy.

Family Story Time
Wednesdays and Thursdays @ 10:15-10:45 am AND 11:30 am-12:00 noon (Meeting Room)
Families with children of all ages will enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes.

Pajama Night Story Time
Tuesday, February 6 @ 6:00-6:30 pm
Gives families with children of all ages an evening option for some activities presented during the daytime. The theme for the week is “Llamas.”
 
Family Fun Time
Monday, February 12 @ 6:00-7:00 pm (Meeting Room)

Families with children of all ages are invited to an evening of games, building challenges, and more.

After-School Break

This activity will not take place in February.

Creative Connections
Activities for school-aged children in grades 4 through 8 – normally take place on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, from 4:30-5:15 pm. The schedule of activities is as follows:

  • February 15 – NO PROGRAM
 Mother Goose Time
Tuesdays @ 10:15-10:45 am
Provides caregiver/infant multisensory circle-time activities -- including simple sign language, folksongs and lullabies, and finger plays -- that are especially designed to stimulate babies’ social, emotional, and physical development through rhythm and music. Mother Goose Time is intended for pre-walking infants from age 0 to 12 months. Attendance is limited to 15 infants. This activity will take place on February 6 and 13 ONLY.

 

YOUNG ADULT PROGRAMS (for teens in grades 9-12)

Teen Mug Decoration
Tuesday, February 6 @ 5:00-6:00 pm (Conference Classroom)
Using paint and sealant, teens and adults will transform a boring, blank mug into a beautiful work of art. Materials will be provided courtesy of the Friends of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library. Registration required.
 
Young Adult Advisory Council
Wednesday, February 21 @ 4:00-5:00 pm (Conference Room)
Teens entering grades 9-12 who are interested in an exciting new leadership opportunity and volunteer-service hours are invited to attend this meeting of the Young Adult Advisory Council. Members will have a chance to share ideas about library programs, to help at events, to give suggestions for teen services, books, and movies, and to meet new people.

Literary Lunch League Book Club
Wednesday, February 7 @ 12:00 noon-1:00 pm (Multipurpose Room)

The book to be discussed isRemarkably Bright Creatures, written by Shelby Van Pelt. This title is available in print, audio on CD, and digitally as an ebook and e-audiobook on OverDrive/Libby and hoopla; additional print copies are available at the check-out desk. Those attending are invited to bring a lunch, if desired. This book club meets on the first Wednesday of every month.

 “The Butler Did It” Mystery Book Club
Thursday, February 8 @ 2:00-3:00 pm (Conference Classroom)
The book to be discussed is The Maid,written by Nita Prose. This title is available in print and digitally as an ebook and e-audiobook on OverDrive/Libby; additional print copies are available at the check-out desk. This book club meets on the second Thursday of every month.

 

ADULT PROGRAMS

Prose Pros Writing Group
Monday, February 5 @ 6:00-7:30 pm (Conference Classroom)

During this session, take advantage of the library’s space, quiet atmosphere, seating, power outlets, and snacks to kick-start your own literary masterpiece! Participants will have an opportunity to share their manuscripts with others and get constructive feedback.

Craft Club
Tuesdays, February 13 and 27 @ 2:00-4:00 pm (Conference Classroom)

Craft enthusiasts of all experience levels – from beginners to advanced – who enjoy any type of crafting are invited to attend to get other crafters’ perspectives, critiques, and suggestions. Chat and network with other crafters who enjoy anything from art and needlework to woodwork and much more! Those attending should bring their projects and their own crafting supplies. Samples of the library’s instructional books, magazines, and websites on various crafts will be available. Crafters are invited to come and go as time permits.

Sewing by Hand Club
Tuesday, February 20 @ 6:00-7:30 pm (Conference Classroom)
In this new monthly sewing club, learn practical hand-sewing skills, such as blind-stitching holes, the blanket stitch, and sewing on buttons, zippers, and more. This group meets on the 3rdTuesday of every month, and a different challenge will be presented each month so participants can practice their skills. This activity is for adults and high school-age teens. No experience is needed. Limited supplies will be provided, courtesy of the Friends of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library. Registration required.

 

ADULT COMPUTER CLASSES

All computer classes will take place in the Computer Lab. Reservations are required. To register online at the library’s website at www.fortbend.lib.tx.us, click on “Classes & Events,” select “Cinco Ranch Branch Library,” and find the program. Participants may also register by calling the library at 281-395-1311, or by visiting the library.

MS Word 2016: Intermediate
Tuesday, February 6 @ 10:30-11:30 am
This class is for people who already have a basic understanding of MS Word, but would like to learn more advanced functions and tools in this word-processing software program.

 

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

ESL Conversation Circles
Fridays, February 2, 9, and 16 @ 2:00–3:00 pm (Multi-purpose Room)
Fort Bend County Libraries presents a program for individuals of all nationalities who would like a place to practice their English language and conversation skills. The “ESL Conversation Circles” provide an opportunity for non-English-speaking people to gather in a relaxed setting and discuss topics of their own choosing while practicing their English skills.
