Katy’s Fussell Senior Center Leads the Charge for 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s with Community Team and Card Fundraiser

August 20 2025

In Katy, Texas, the spirit of community continues to grow stronger with every step—especially at the City of Katy Fussell Senior Center, where a dynamic group of older adults are turning purpose into action as they prepare for the 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Katy, TX on Saturday, September 27.

Through its walking team, Miles for Memories, the center is once again inviting residents of all ages to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by walking, donating, or supporting their creative fundraiser: a cheerful set of greeting cards designed to “send a smile and make a difference.”

For the Fussell Senior Center, this is more than a one-day event—it’s a cause rooted in connection, compassion, and the mission to support countless Katy-area families impacted by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

“Many of our Katy families are facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementias. They need us now more than ever,” shared the center’s team. “With your help, we can be there to support them.”

Meet the Heart Behind the Hustle: The Fussell Senior Center

Opened in 2012 and named after longtime community advocate Mildred Fussell, the City of Katy Fussell Senior Center is the cornerstone of senior life in Katy. Located near the heart of town, the center is a proud member of the National Institute of Senior Centers and a two-time recipient of Houston’s Best Senior Center from the Senior Resource Guide.

The center's motto, inspired by a 95-year-old member in 2003, is “Why Stay at Home When You Can Go?”—and that energy radiates through every program they offer. From exercise classes, wellness checks, and day trips to bingo nights, birthday parties, and craft sessions, Katy’s Senior Services Department strives to keep older adults active, engaged, and socially connected.

But when it comes to advocacy, the center takes its role seriously.

For several years now, the Fussell Senior Center has organized a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, bringing together staff, seniors, volunteers, and local families to raise both awareness and critical funds for the Alzheimer’s Association.

A Thoughtful Way to Give: Card Fundraiser Supports the Mission

As a creative twist to traditional fundraising, the Fussell team is offering a set of five greeting cards for $5, available at the center’s front desk or through participating volunteers. The cards are meant to spread joy while raising money for a cause that affects millions of Americans—and so many here in Katy.

All proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association and can also be donated online at act.alz.org/goto/CoKMilesforMemories2025.

“Your purchase helps fund critical research and support services,” says the team. “Let’s send smiles while supporting the fight to end Alzheimer’s.”

Why It Matters: A Disease Impacting Every Corner of the Community

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 7 million Americans currently live with Alzheimer’s, and over 12 million provide unpaid care for them. Every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops the disease. And for the families walking in Katy this September, those statistics are personal.

Held in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The Katy event, hosted in LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch, has become a meaningful tradition for local families, schools, churches, and businesses.

“Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping—and neither are we,” reads the team’s mission.

How to Get Involved

Here are three simple ways Katy residents can take part:

  • Join the Walk – Register online and walk with the City of Katy’s Miles for Memories team.
  • Support the Fundraiser – Buy a $5 greeting card set to support Alzheimer’s research.
  • Spread the Word – Share the walk page, invite friends, and help raise awareness throughout the community.

Whether you’re a longtime Fussell member or a first-time participant, your support matters.
