Katy Heritage Society Offers Scholarship to Support Lifelong Learning and Community Growth
In the spirit of the Katy founders who built a thriving community from a wild prairie, the Katy Heritage Society is offering a scholarship opportunity to those seeking to better their lives through education. This non-profit volunteer organization, dedicated to preserving Katy's historic resources, is providing this chance to anyone who wishes to provide for their family, advance in their career, learn a trade, or pursue higher education.
Open to any age group, this scholarship was created particularly for adults or currently employed individuals who aspire to further their education and maximize their career opportunities. Those seeking the scholarship must either be enrolled or aiming to enroll in an accredited community college, college, university, business, vocational, continuing education program, or technical school. Furthermore, they must reside or work within the geographical boundaries of the Katy ISD.
This year, the Katy Heritage Society plans to award one scholarship of up to $1,000, with an additional scholarship of the same amount being awarded jointly with the Fort Bend Lions. The funding for these scholarships comes from the proceeds of the book "Historic Katy," other fundraisers, and contributions made by members and friends of the society.

For those interested in applying, the requirements include conducting original research and writing an essay based on a topic related to Katy's history or notable persons from the area. The book "Historic Katy" must not be the main source of information. All research must be accurately documented, and the content must align with the society's mission of preserving local history.
Applicants have until October 1, 2024, to submit their scholarship application and paper. All entries will be reviewed impartially by a panel of judges, who will evaluate each submission based on its historical accuracy, the impact of the topic on Katy's history, and its overall literary merit.
The winner will be announced at the November General Meeting of the Society, and will receive a scholarship check for up to $1,000 made payable to their higher education institution.
Interested persons can submit their applications and essays by email on or before October 1, 2024 by visiting the Katy Heritage Society website. For more information about this exciting opportunity, email katyheritagesociety@outlook.com.
