Katy Fire, Emergency Management Share Back-to-School Safety Tips

August 15 2023

With Katy ISD going back to school on August 16, the Katy Fire Department and City of Katy Office of Emergency Management have a few helpful back-to-school safety tips for inside and outside the classroom to keep kids, parents and the community safe.

From Katy Fire Department

Backpack Safety
Ensure that backpacks are not overloaded, which can cause back injuries. Make sure they have reflective materials if kids are walking during dawn or dusk.

School Zone Safety
Slow down in school zones! Keep an eye out for buses, pedestrians, and kids on bikes. Always stop for school buses when their lights are flashing.

Bike Safety
If your child rides a bike to school, ensure they wear a helmet and know the rules of the road. Teach them to make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.

Classroom Fire Safety
Remind your kids about the importance of fire drills. They should know two ways out of every room and where to meet outside.

After School Safety
If your child comes home to an empty house, ensure they know not to use the stove or oven without adult supervision. Practice an emergency plan with them, including calling 911 in case of fire or other emergencies.

From City of Katy Office of Emergency Management

Emergency Contact Info
Ensure your child's school has up-to-date emergency contact information. Discuss with your child who they should contact if they can't reach you.

Stay Informed

Transportation Safety
Whether by bus, car, bike, or foot, ensure your children understand the importance of following traffic rules and being vigilant around busy streets.

Disaster Preparedness
Discuss potential disasters that could affect our city. Ensure your family has a plan in place for floods, storms, or any other relevant hazards.

School Safety Protocols
Familiarize yourself with the safety procedures at your child's school.

Let's all work together to ensure the safety of our community as we transition back to school!
