Katy America Recycles Day 2026: Free Electronics Recycling, Paper Shredding and Coat Drive Set for November 7
Katy residents looking to clean out their garages, get rid of outdated electronics or safely dispose of old documents will have a chance to do it all for free next month. And for anyone with extra winter coats tucked away in a closet, those can find a new home, too.
Keep Katy Beautiful is celebrating America Recycles Day 2026 with a free community recycling event on Saturday, November 7, from 9 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church of Katy, located at 600 Pin Oak Road in Katy, Texas. The event will offer electronics recycling, paper shredding, scrap metal and appliance recycling, and a coat drive benefiting people in need.
Whether it's an old television that has been sitting in the garage for years, a stack of documents that needs shredding or a refrigerator that's no longer working, the event gives Katy-area households an opportunity to dispose of eligible items without adding them to the landfill.

What Can Residents Recycle at Katy's America Recycles Day Event?
One of the biggest conveniences of the event is the variety of materials accepted. Rather than making separate trips to different recycling facilities, residents can bring several categories of eligible household items to one location.
Electronics Recycling: Old Computers, Televisions, Phones and More
Outdated technology has a way of accumulating around the house. Old computers, unused chargers and televisions that have been replaced often end up in storage because residents aren't sure where to take them.
The November 7 event will accept a broad range of electronics, including computer systems and accessories, hard drives, circuit boards, modems, routers, televisions, monitors, photocopiers, PDAs and other handheld devices.
Cell phones, chargers, toner cartridges and ink, CDs, DVDs and batteries are also listed among accepted items.
For Katy homeowners planning to recycle computers, phones or hard drives, removing personal information and backing up important files before dropping off devices is a good precaution. Residents should also confirm whether any devices containing sensitive data will be securely destroyed or simply recycled.
Free Paper Shredding for Household Documents
Anyone with drawers full of old statements, outdated paperwork or documents containing personal information can take advantage of the event's paper shredding service.
All paper products are accepted, and residents do not need to remove staples or paper clips.
However, organizers ask that participants remove anything that cannot be bent with two fingers.
For households that have been putting off sorting through old files, the event offers a convenient opportunity to clear out paperwork while taking steps to protect personal information.
Scrap Metal and Appliance Recycling
Larger household items can be particularly difficult to dispose of, especially when they are too bulky for regular trash collection.
The America Recycles Day event will accept metal scraps and a variety of household appliances and metal items, including refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, ironing boards, irons, bicycles, rims, scooters and ladders.
Extension cords, barbecue pits, light fixtures, fans, sinks, pipes and faucets are also included on the accepted materials list.
There is one important restriction for anyone bringing an appliance: Materials containing Freon will not be accepted.Residents with refrigerators or other cooling appliances should verify that their items meet the event's requirements before bringing them.
Katy Coat Drive Will Help Neighbors in Need
The November 7 event isn't just about recycling. It is also an opportunity to give back to the community as cooler weather approaches.
Keep Katy Beautiful is partnering with Clothed by Faith to collect gently used coats and outerwear.
Clothed by Faith is a nonprofit organization that provides clothing assistance to children and adults experiencing hardship. The coat drive gives residents a chance to pass along clothing that may no longer be needed in their own households but could make a meaningful difference for another family.
For those planning a fall closet cleanout, setting aside clean, gently used jackets and coats is an easy way to participate, even without bringing recycling materials.
Greater Houston Lions Club Will Collect Eyeglasses and Other Items
The Greater Houston Lions Club will also participate in the event by collecting prescription eyeglasses, regular eyeglasses, sunglasses and eyeglass cases.
Residents can additionally donate plastic film and shopping bags to the club.
Eyeglass collection programs associated with Lions clubs help make donated eyewear available for vision-related charitable efforts. For residents with old prescription glasses sitting unused in a drawer, this provides another opportunity to put them toward a worthwhile purpose.
What Items Are Not Accepted at the Katy Recycling Event?
Although the event accepts many household materials, some items are specifically excluded.
According to the official event flyer, organizers cannot accept cardboard, paint, tires, yard waste, biohazards, flammable materials, materials containing Freon, nuclear materials, PCB-containing materials, radioactive materials or transformers.
Residents should keep these restrictions in mind before arriving. Items not accepted at the event may require specialized disposal through other programs or authorized facilities.
Why America Recycles Day Matters for Katy
The upcoming event is part of the broader America Recycles Day initiative, a nationwide effort associated with Keep America Beautiful that encourages Americans to reduce waste, recycle properly and make more environmentally responsible decisions.
America Recycles Day is nationally observed on November 15, although Katy's community event will take place a week earlier on November 7.
Locally, Keep Katy Beautiful works to promote beautification, environmental responsibility and community involvement. Its programs encourage residents to take an active role in caring for the city, from reducing litter to supporting recycling and neighborhood improvement efforts.
Ahead of this year's event, representatives of Keep Katy Beautiful joined the City of Katy for the presentation of an America Recycles Day Proclamation recognizing the importance of recycling, reducing waste and keeping the community clean.
The proclamation reflects the city's continued support for environmental awareness and local recycling efforts.
For a community like Katy, where established neighborhoods sit alongside expanding residential and commercial developments, opportunities to responsibly dispose of unwanted household materials remain useful. Large appliances, electronics and scrap metal are not always appropriate for curbside trash collection, and finding suitable disposal options can take time.
Community recycling events help make that process more accessible while encouraging residents to think about what can be reused, donated or recycled instead of thrown away.
How Katy Residents Can Prepare for the November 7 Recycling Event
With the event lasting just three hours, a little preparation can make drop-off easier.
Residents can begin by gathering eligible electronics, sorting paperwork for shredding and identifying metal items or appliances they no longer need. Those donating coats should make sure the clothing is gently used and suitable for someone else to wear.
It is also worth checking old drawers for unused eyeglasses and collecting eligible plastic shopping bags for the Greater Houston Lions Club.
Before heading out, residents should review the restrictions, remove personal information from electronic devices and avoid bringing materials that the event cannot accept.
For additional details about Katy's America Recycles Day celebration, residents can visit the City of Katy website or email kkb@cityofkaty.com.
From clearing out a garage to donating a warm coat, the November 7 event offers several ways for residents to make good use of items they no longer need. It is also a reminder that keeping Katy clean and caring for neighbors can begin with something as simple as deciding what to do with the things already sitting around the house.
