A Little Holiday Cheer Goes a Long Way: Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels Seeks Secret Santa Gifts for Local Seniors
The holidays are a time for family gatherings, exchanging gifts and catching up with people we may not see as often as we'd like. But for some older adults in Fort Bend and Waller counties, the season can be a lonely one, especially for those who live alone, have lost loved ones or can no longer get out and visit as easily as they once did.
For the 18th year, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels is inviting the community to help bring a little Christmas cheer to those neighbors through its annual Secret Santa program. The idea is simple: fill a reusable holiday shopping bag with a few thoughtful gifts, drop it off in Rosenberg and help make sure every older adult served by the organization receives something special this holiday season.
The program has become a longtime local tradition, giving families, businesses, churches and community groups an opportunity to do something meaningful for older residents, many of whom have spent decades contributing to the same communities they now call home.
“While many of us look forward to celebrating the holidays with family and friends, some of our senior neighbors will spend much of the season alone,” said Fort Bend Seniors CEO Doug Simpson. “These gifts may be simple, but they bring joy, connection and the reassurance that their community cares about them.”
Why the Holidays Can Be Especially Difficult for Older Adults
While loneliness can affect people of any age, older adults may face circumstances that make staying socially connected more difficult.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults are among the groups at greater risk for social isolation. Losing a spouse or longtime friends, living with a disability, having limited access to transportation or experiencing health problems can all make it harder to maintain relationships and participate in everyday activities.
The CDC also reports that prolonged loneliness and social isolation are associated with increased risks of depression, heart disease, stroke and dementia. These concerns extend well beyond the holidays, but a season centered on togetherness can be particularly difficult for someone who has fewer opportunities to spend time with others.
For an older adult who is homebound, getting together with family or attending a holiday celebration may not be as simple as making plans and getting in the car. Even a trip to the store to pick out Christmas decorations or shop for gifts can become challenging.
That is part of what makes the Fort Bend Seniors Secret Santa program so personal. The gifts are not elaborate, nor are they intended to be. A fresh towel set, a favorite personal care product or a small holiday item can offer a welcome surprise, particularly when it comes from someone who simply wanted to make another person's day a little better.
What to Put in a Fort Bend Seniors Secret Santa Gift Bag
Fort Bend Seniors is asking donors to fill a large, reusable, holiday-themed shopping bag with three types of items:
-
A new, gender-neutral towel set.
-
A personal care item, such as shampoo and conditioner, soap, lotion, or a soft toothbrush and toothpaste.
-
One holiday-related item to add a festive touch.
The organization asks that donations be packed in reusable shopping bags rather than paper gift bags. Food and glass items should not be included.
For families looking for a way to give back during the Christmas season, the program offers an opportunity to involve children in choosing gifts for someone they may never meet. Neighborhood groups, churches, school organizations and local businesses can also collect bags together, making it easy for several households or coworkers to participate.
There is no need to purchase anything extravagant. The goal is to provide each Meals on Wheels client with a holiday gift and the knowledge that someone in their community was thinking of them.

Fort Bend Seniors Has Been Looking After Local Older Adults Since 1974
The Secret Santa program is just one of the ways Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels supports older adults throughout the year.
Founded in 1974 by community leaders who recognized a growing need for regular meals for seniors, the Rosenberg-based nonprofit has spent more than five decades helping older residents maintain their independence.
What began with approximately 20,000 meals during its first year has grown into a program serving thousands of older adults across Fort Bend and Waller counties.
According to the organization's 2025 Impact Report, Fort Bend Seniors provided 369,611 meals to more than 2,100 seniors during the year. The nonprofit also reported providing 19,414 rides and operating six senior centers across its service area.
Its home-delivered meal program serves older adults who cannot safely prepare their own meals or travel to a senior center. Staff and volunteer drivers bring meals directly to recipients, providing not only nutrition but also an opportunity to check on their well-being.
For seniors who are able to leave home, the organization's activity centers offer hot lunches, recreation, health screenings and opportunities to spend time with others.
Fort Bend Seniors serves eligible adults age 60 and older, with services based on physical need rather than income. Programs are provided at no cost to participants through public funding and the support of individual donors, businesses and community partners.
The human connection is an important part of that work. A Meals on Wheels delivery may be one of the few regular interactions a homebound older adult has during the week. Drivers can also notice when something seems wrong or when a recipient may need additional assistance.
For families who worry about an aging parent or grandparent living independently, those visits can offer some peace of mind.
And during the holidays, the Secret Santa program gives the organization one more way to let those seniors know they haven't been forgotten.
A Simple Way to Include Older Neighbors in the Holiday Season
There are plenty of holiday donation drives throughout Fort Bend County, but the Fort Bend Seniors Secret Santa program has a particularly personal purpose. It focuses on people who may not be able to participate in the celebrations happening around them, even though they have been part of the community for years.
Some may have raised children here, worked in local businesses, volunteered in churches or watched neighborhoods grow from quiet roads into the communities families know today. Others may have moved to the area more recently to be closer to relatives or receive additional care.
Whatever their circumstances, the holidays are an opportunity to remember that older neighbors are still part of the community, even when they are not often seen at neighborhood gatherings or local events.
For residents wondering how to help seniors during the 2026 holiday season, filling a Secret Santa bag is one practical place to start. It takes a shopping trip, a few everyday items and a stop at the Fort Bend Seniors office in Rosenberg.
For the person receiving it, that small effort may become one of the nicer surprises of the season.
