Join the Mission: Keep Katy Beautiful Celebrates America Recycles Day with Community Engagement and Environmental Impact

October 22 2024

This year, the Katy community is once again coming together for the Keep Katy Beautiful America Recycles Day event on Saturday, November 2, 2024. This impactful initiative, held at Katy's First Baptist Church located at 600 Pin Oak Road in Katy, encourages residents to bring a broad spectrum of items, from electronic devices, paper, and metal scraps, to large appliances for recycling.

Keep Katy Beautiful is an initiative that was brought into existence in 1993 by Mayor Skip Conner, with a mission to enhance the environmental health of the city through various methods such as beautification, litter prevention, and waste reduction. The organization works diligently in partnership with student and civic organizations to further the cause, utilizing funds from city budget, private donations, grants and the Governor’s Community Achievement Award for various beautification projects.

Last year, Keep Katy Beautiful saw an impressive turnout at the America Recycles Day event, with the participation from 134 cars driving through their recycling initiative. The event resulted in the collection of 5,500 pounds of shredding, 44 pairs of eyewear, and a truckload of scrap metal.

The significance of America Recycles Day, a national initiative by Keep America Beautiful, extends beyond the city of Katy. This day is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to endorsing and celebrating recycling in the United States. The aim is not just to tidy up communities but to educate about the economic and environmental benefits of recycling. Recycling reduces landfills, saves energy and natural resources, and decreases greenhouse gas emissions, ultimately contributing to the sustainability of the environment for future generations.

This year, the Katy Lions Club will once again participate in the event, collecting regular and prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, and other eyewear for donation. Through various initiatives and projects, the Katy Lions Club, part of Lions International, strives to address community needs and improve the lives of those in need, with dedicated members working tirelessly to support causes related to childhood cancer, diabetes, disaster relief, the environment, humanitarian efforts, reducing hunger, vision care, youth, and social welfare.

For those interested in joining the initiative, further information and the list of acceptable items for recycling can be found at cityofkaty.com/ARD. The Keep Katy Beautiful America Recycles Day, which will operate from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, November 2, 2024, is an opportunity to be part of a national movement and make a tremendous difference, both locally and globally.
