Honoring Katy's Heroes: Join the Headstones for Heroes Initiative to Mark Veterans' Graves
In Katy, compassionate community advocates are seeking involvement from the community to help ensure that the graves of local veterans are rightfully marked with headstones. The "Headstones for Heroes" initiative, spearheaded by Ernie Cormier, the former leader of Katy Elks Lodge 2628 and American Legion Post 164 Katy, is a testament to the community's unwavering respect and gratitude for the valiant servicemen and women who called Katy home.
During a City of Katy City Council meeting earlier this week, Cormier shared during Public Comment that approximately 15 veterans interred within city limits whose final resting places are unmarked. Determined to ensure that these brave men and women are honored with the headstone they deserve, Cormier rallied the American Legion Post 164 Katy, Katy Elks Lodge 2628, and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 164 in Katy to band together and rectify this omission as part of the "Headstones for Heroes" initiative. These local organizations are vital pillars of the Katy community, working tirelessly towards the betterment and support of local veterans. The American Legion Post 164 and Auxiliary Unit 164 offer an extensive range of programs and services, from assistance and advocacy to comradeship and commemoration of fallen heroes. Similarly, the Katy Elks Lodge 2628 is dedicated to community service, charitable work, and kinship. They play a vital role in fostering a sense of unity and goodwill in the Katy community.
The "Headstones for Heroes" initiative is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices our veterans made. It ensures that their memories are preserved, their bravery honored, and their resting places marked with the respect they deserve. Each headstone costs approximately $650, and any donation, big or small, can make a significant difference.
This initiative encourages the Katy community to champion their local heroes, either with a donation or by spreading the word about this worthy cause. To lend your support and honor the memory of Katy's veterans, contact Ernie Cormier via Facebook or by calling 713-202-5933.
