Honoring Fallen Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Fernando Esqueda: A Legacy of Courage, Dedication, and Unwavering Service

July 17 2024

Harris County is mourning the tragic loss of Deputy Fernando Esqueda, a devoted officer, family man and friend, who was tragically killed in the line of duty during an ambush on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. Deputy Esqueda was on duty, investigating a vehicle connected to an ongoing aggravated assault case when the fatal incident occurred.

Deputy Esqueda, a five-year veteran, was assigned to the Violent Person Task Force and was working mandatory patrols following the wake of Hurricane Beryl. Following his death, swift justice was handed down as suspect Ronald “Ronnie” Palmer Jr. was apprehended at a residence in northeast Houston. A second arrest was later made, with Dremone Francis charged with Capital Murder, according to officials.

Born to Catalina Guerrero and Jose Leonardo Esqueda on February 13, 1996, Fernando was the loving brother of six siblings and a devoted uncle to eight nieces and nephews. He was the heart of his circle of friends, including his closest Juan Martinez and Yael Batista. Fernando was engaged to his fiancé, Emily Guerra, with their wedding planned for September 14, 2024.

Raised in Houston, Fernando attended local schools, where he cultivated his passion for music and football. He developed a strong work ethic from a young age, taking jobs at Express and Texas Lone Star Valet, alongside his high-school best friend Gabriel Felipe Lopez. At just 18 years of age, Fernando kickstarted his career in law enforcement working for the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) in Huntsville, despite an hour-long commute each way.

His initial engagement with law enforcement motivated him to join the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in 2019. His dedication and bravery earned him a transfer to the Violent Persons Task Force by 2022. Throughout his career, Deputy Esqueda earned the admiration and respect of his peers and the community for his unwavering dedication.

Fernando, known to many for his laughter, loyalty, and infectious spirit, was a devoted outdoorsman. His love for hunting, fishing, and dancing reflected his zest for life. He believed in the power of unconditional love and the strength of family bonds.

In his own words, Fernando wrote, “I am a strong believer that your reason is always known by your mind. Your purpose is only known by your heart.” Sadly, Fernando Esqueda departed this world far too soon but leaves behind a lasting legacy of honor, courage, and strength. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him and those he served.

Visitation for Deputy Fernando Esqueda is scheduled for July 18, 2024, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, located at 2405 Navigation Blvd., Houston, TX 77003, from 5PM to 7PM, followed by a Rosary from 7PM to 8PM. A funeral mass will be held on July 19, 2024, at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, located at 1111 St. Joseph Pkwy., Houston, TX, 77002 at 10AM with honors to follow. The committal will commence approximately at 12:30PM at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, located at 6900 Lawndale St., Houston, Texas 77023. The community is encouraged to attend to pay their respects and show their support.
