For Grayson Lakes residents who have been meaning to clear out an overstuffed closet, reclaim some garage space or finally part with the toys the kids have outgrown, Saturday, Oct. 3, offers a good reason to get started.

The Grayson Lakes Neighborhood Garage Sale will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., bringing sellers and bargain hunters out across the community for a morning of driveway shopping.

There is no registration deadline keeping latecomers on the sidelines, either. Residents who decide at the last minute that they have enough to sell can simply set up Saturday morning and take part.

For shoppers, that means there may be new tables and unexpected finds scattered throughout Grayson Lakes even if they were not advertised ahead of time.

A Simpler Garage Sale Format This Year

This year's Grayson Lakes garage sale will operate a little differently from some previous neighborhood sales.

There will be no Friday night pre-sale and no advance list of participating homes or items for sale. Sellers should simply set up on their own driveways Saturday morning, while shoppers can make their way through the neighborhood and see what they find along the way.

Grouping lower-priced items can also save time. Personal finance experts cited by AARP have recommended assigning one price to an entire table or category because it reduces the work of individually tagging merchandise and can encourage shoppers to buy several things at once.

Presentation matters, even when the "storefront" is a driveway.

And for anything that may have significantly more value — such as antiques, jewelry, collectibles or artwork — doing a little research before sticking on a price tag can prevent an expensive surprise later. Estate-sale professionals recommend checking the marketplace before selling potentially valuable pieces and, when warranted, seeking an appraisal.

A few things can make the six-hour sale easier for both sellers and shoppers:

• Have plenty of small bills and change ready before 7 a.m.
• Clearly mark prices whenever possible.
• Group similar items so shoppers can browse quickly.
