From Shelter to Service: Abba's Transformative Journey with Service Dogs, Inc. and Harris County Pets
In a tale of transformation and hope, Service Dogs, Inc, in collaboration with Harris County Pets, is excited to share the journey of Abba from shelter resident to her training to become a full-fledged service dog.
Abba, previously named Marley, was brought to Harris County Pets in February, rescued from the streets of Channelview. At just 13 months, this brindle and white Australian Cattle Dog mix with a friendly demeanor and love for treats, was at risk of making it to the euthanasia list. The 50-pound girl, described as submissive, sweet, and dog-friendly, was given a second chance thanks to the partnership between Service Dogs, Inc. and Harris County Pets.
Service Dogs, Inc., a Texas-based organization, has made incredible strides in transforming shelter dogs into service dogs for over three decades. Their groundbreaking methods yield tailored training programs to provide individuals facing significant challenges from mobility issues, deafness, and trauma, crucial companionship and aid.
Sharing this spirit of service, Harris County Pets, a municipal shelter, is committed to accepting every animal in need. They receive around 16,000 to 20,000 animals annually and have notably increased their live release rate. Their collaboration with Service Dogs, Inc. is to give pets a fresh start and a new purpose that's life-changing for their companion, and for them.
Abba's story is just one in a series of transformations due to this new partnership. A previously at-risk shelter dog, Abba quickly transitioned from the basic obedience stage to task work and public outings within only 43 days, a process that normally takes around 90 days. Abba recently graduated into phase two of their training program, and will begin focusing on task work, including hearing dog duties, and public outings.
This partnership between Service Dogs, Inc. and Harris County Pets is rising to the challenge of bettering our community, setting an example of the remarkable potential wastage when pets are not given the chance to shine. The services they provide are extending lifelines to Texans, and in doing so, they are reiterating the incredible capacity of dogs to provide aid and companionship to humans in need.
Keeping with their commitment, Service Dogs, Inc. and Harris County Pets are looking forward to more rescue organizations joining them. Email rescueme@countypets.com for more details on how to collaborate with Harris County Pets.
