From Los Angeles to Fulshear: How Jaime Burgos is Inspiring the Next Generation of Breakdancers
Nearly a year ago, Jaime Burgos, a seasoned breakdancer with over 30 years of experience, left his life in Los Angeles and relocated to Fulshear. His motivations were multifaceted: a romantic interest, the allure of a more affordable lifestyle, and a heartfelt desire to introduce breakdancing to the youth in his new community.
Growing up in Tampa, Florida, Burgos discovered his passion for breakdancing at a young age. His journey took off in 1999 when he landed his first significant opportunity at Universal Studios. Since then, he has worked as a stuntman, actor, and dancer, touring globally with artists like Janet Jackson, Gwen Stefani, and Avril Lavigne. Despite this impressive resume, Jaime feels that his mission is far from complete.
Burgos' path hasn’t always been easy. He managed to evade the pitfalls of street life that claimed his brother and incarcerated his father by finding a constructive outlet in dance. He views dance as a sanctuary that provided him with purpose and helped him realize his potential. “Dance saved my life on many levels. Once I discovered it, I found my voice and something to believe in. Dance allowed me to connect with a community and find my purpose,” he reflected on his past.
In Fulshear, Burgos identified a gap in the local dance scene. While numerous dance classes were available, none focused on contemporary styles like breakdancing. Driven by his passion to share his expertise, he began teaching breakdance at local institutions, including Alief, Houston ISD, British International School, Peak Academy, and the Boys and Girls Club.

“I want my students to pursue what feels right for them. The essence of art is feeling, and I believe the kids are missing out on that,” Burgos shared, expressing his teaching philosophy. He also acknowledges the mental health benefits of dance, noting, “I can walk into a classroom and see kids who are withdrawn. By the time I leave, they’re happier and more engaged,” highlighting the transformative power of movement.
His decision to move to Fulshear was further influenced by his girlfriend, whose son is a rising star in Hollywood, having worked with actors like Ryan Gosling. She guides young talent through the complexities of the industry with her company, Star Break.
When it comes to teaching breakdance, Burgos emphasizes the importance of authenticity. “My strength lies in preserving the true essence of this dance,” he stated, underscoring his training with breakdancing pioneers. He believes in teaching proper techniques to prevent injuries and maintain the art form's integrity.
Despite his significant professional achievements, Burgos considers his most important accomplishment to be his role as a mentor to young breakdancers in his community, with hopes of opening his own dance studio in the future. “I aim to create a supportive community. I want to be a leader and mentor who shows these kids the value of hard work and excellence. Through this journey, they gain confidence. I aspire to be the person who changes lives and helps others discover their voice through art,” Burgos shared.
